What would be the benefit of this over 2 separate monitors?

Would depend upon how many outputs you have on your video card Charlie.  If you have but one DVI then this would enable you to view more real estate at one time.
If you have two DVI outs then you can get the equivalent to three monitors (my application) with only two monitors.

Note: I had some issues with my Nvidia Ge Force GT 440 video card in that I could not get the AOC monitor to work with an Acer monitor on my two DVI outputs ( D and I).  I had to purchase a mini HDMI to HDMI cable, plug into that output to get it to display 2560 resolution.  Which it now does.  And I love it.

By the way, this screen is a wide-screen format: narrow and really wide.  Great for document editing.

Can you use this monitor on a vertical orientation without buying additional hardware?

By vertical I mean rotated 90 degrees.

I'm using a 23.6 inch display for gaming at the moment. Would you say the screen height would be roughly the same as that?

No, I wouldn't say that. This monitor is really great for anyone who's looking to put two screens side by side, e.g. trader, programmer doing debugging, professor grading homework, etc..

If you're looking for height, it might not meet your needs. Mine measures at about 11 1/4 inches high (visible area). You can actually get this number by running a little math: because this is a 21:9 ratio monitor, the height = sqrt[29^2/(21^2+9^2)] * 9 = 11.42.

does this monitor support windows 7 also?

Yes, It does. It's basically a plug and play monitor. You may want to run a quick Windows Update after plugging this in to see if Microsoft has any update patch for this monitor. Just make sure you're running the latest drivers for your graphic card and your graphic card supports this resolution.

will this work with surface pro 2 as 2 extra monitors (split screen) ? Even set up as daisy chain or one mirror and a second screen. I would just prefer the one monitor acting as 2 as opposed to 2 separate monitors. Thanks

It will work with the surface. The main thing you'll need to look at is will the surface support 2560x1080. If you just want to run it as split screen it will be fine. I did it with a droid razr max and you can pip or Window mode it. On the phone it just mirrored the screen. You'll have to consult the surface documentation to see what it supports, but the monitor should do just about anything. On a side note there is some issue with this monitor that causes a popping sound when hdmi devices are turned on or off. I rma'd my first one, but the replacement does the exact same thing. Not a big deal and for the price I can live with it.

Is the stand adjustable?  If not, has this been a problem at all?

The stand only allows tilt adjustment from -5° to 20 °. This is adequate for my needs. It does have screw holes for vesa 100 mm mounts so it can be mounted on a wall or on an "Adjustable Tilting SINGLE Desk Mount Bracket".

Hi I just received this monitor and I am getting an error message when I try to play movies - device not HDCP compliant.  I am connected to a mac mini using thunderbolt.  Tried HDMI but got same error?

That means the monitor is not compatible with HDCP technology, some movies are created with this format to protect copyright. You just can not watch that kind of movies through DVI neither HDMI in this monitor.

I am new to this and just built my first gaming PC. I've been using a HDMI connected to my HDTV. I need a monitor and this one looks very nice. I do lots of schoolwork and web browsing. I'm also an avid gamer. I have two questions for people who have used this monitor:

1. Is this monitor good for gaming and video watching? I play competitive multi-player every once in a while but I mainly play singe-player games like Bioshock or coop games like Left 4 Dead 2.

2. Will my graphics card support 2560x1080 resolution? I have a EVGA GTX 760 4GB FTW

Love it for gaming. Had to download a program called Flawless widescreen for some games, but works so GOOD... 
Movie look good, as they usually fill the screen.

It will work great for your GPU card
