is this noisy and can i connect it to a normal outlet?

This unit is quiet, however it requires a 30 AMP 120V twist plug connection. not a standard wall outlet due to the capacity of the unit. This unit performs better than the SMT-3000. The batteries are sealed in a single metal case that makes servicing them easier. The internal relay contacts on the SMX-3000 that switch over the power from line to battery are more robust that can handle switching under load better, I have had many failed welded contacts on the cheaper SMT-3000. This unit is worth the money.

The pictures show this product as rack mountable, though the specifications have no information about that. Why would that be?

It's rack mountable or tower standing (as pictured). I have this unit in my rack.

You CAN NOT connect this to a normal outlet. The plug is different and is 110-120 30 amps with a special plug. It would only be noisy after an event when it was charging back up. Under normal circumstances you'll never hear it.
