Does the manufacturer accept the old battery for recycling? This would seem to be the most effective/least wasteful recycling procedure, assuming this is a standard battery size.

I didn't find any info that indicated they would take it back. My option is to take it to my local hazzardous-stuff recycling center. I've successfully taken other batteries there.
