short answer, yes, it is compatible. This power supply fits most desktop purposes for home office tasks, uploading/download tasks or converting or burning . As any MB, CPU and power supply combo that is overtasked, the power supply will maintain it range voltages. I always buy efficient so Not to overtask any part of my system.

This power supply was not sufficient for the 500W I needed and Newegg wouldn't accept a return. I reccomend spending a little extra money and picking up a Corsair 500W instead

No you'll be fine with 500. I always buy my power supplies higher wattage than required. That way in the future when I do upgrades I don't need to worry about if I'm gonna have enough juice.

Building a system with an MSI 970A-G43 motherboard, which has an 8-pin cpu power plug. This power supply has a 6-pin power plug, and there's an adapter 6-pin to 8-pin. Will this provide the power that the motherboard and cpu need?  CPU is an AMD FX8320.

I used this as a cheap replacement to fix an older PC which is still running without issue. If you're building a new PC, I would use one of the newer, higher quality 750W power supplies just to ensure there would be no power issues and so that you could add or upgrade components later on if needed.

I bought this a while back.  I is time to retire and repurpose it.  I plan to turn this into a simple 12V bench power supply.  It says it has two 12V rails.  However all of the yellow 12v wires are soldered together into the same spot on the circuit board.  Is it possible this is not really a dual rail power supply?

500 w I dout it would have on side if dual rail probem is how uses it some power supplys are smart combine rails if needed some are not,  
u payfor what u get  tell u this most all hot power lines most likey go same place on board if so only one rail  these power supplys not worth buying  time u add video card u talking 800 watts at min   yea u push some these run them but u start have hardware probems do to lack power

It should...I bought this to fit in my inspiron (I believe it's square, just like the original factory PSU it's replacing).  From the reviews I read, this should be a big step up from the factory 300W factory PSU.
