How much amperage does this fan require? Just killed one by connecting it to a 12 volt, 7 amp battery.

100mA or so.  Neither the amperage required nor the amperage deliverable has anything to do with your failure.   If your power supply can't handle the current (virtually impossible) the voltage will be drawn down, but the fan will probably turn.  You can run these on 3V, slowly. If you supplied voltage to the RPM sense line,  possibly you could have killed it.  If you supplied the wrong voltage by a huge margin like 24V you could burn it up.  The higher the voltage the faster the smoke.  I doubt reverse voltage can harm them, but don't do that.
