Will it work without a back up battery? will comcast give me a hard time - will they know it doesn't have one installed. Haven't ordered one yet but expecting the unit today.

1) "Backup battery", if you mean the internal battery, the modem will operate without a battery installed. I use an external UPS. 2) " Will Comcast give me a hard time?" Comcast wants you to lease the modem from them. That explains why it is so difficult to find one to purchase, but you are in the right place with Newegg. NOTE: This modem is the real deal for Xfinity internet and Voice fone.  Works great.

Question 2

I am looking to replace the Comcast Arris TG 862G-CT / DOCSIS3.0EMTA and was wondering if this or a better / faster unit will work for me?     thank you for your help in this matter!

I believe they are both 8x4 Docsis 3.0 so they are the same at getting data to and from Comcast.  You can add a faster/higher powered wireless router after the modem and get much better wireless range and performance.   You can run the Comcast router in bridge mode with a third party router, but personally I had trouble doing this.  They force you to use their DNS servers and when they update their router settings would change.  I get over 270mb down and 32mb up.

can I use a range extender with this modem?

Actually, the range extender goes downstream and is paired with your router.  Just don't make the mistake I did...make sure your available modem bps speed matches or, better yet, exceeds
your incoming signal speed. i.e. your service is 1gbps, make sure your modem is rated for that speed.

Does this work with Optimum / Cablevision?

You should check with your cable company before picking a model. They may have a way for you to walk through the process on their website based on your account information (I did that with Comcast and it was quick and straightforward). I am pleased with this product as it allows me to use my own router rather than have wi-fi enabled by default (netgear makes models with a physical switch on the exterior!).

Not computer smart but was told I have to get a 32 channel modem to work with suddlenlink. Is this equal to 32 channel?

These are channels for upload and download. Linksys explanation as follow:
