Can this be taken out of Windows S mode?

Yes it can. As I recall (it's been maybe 9 months since I did it) you go to Microsoft website and they warn you that the process can't be reversed. That's fine with me. If you google something like "get out of Windows S mode" you'll find where to go and what to do.
