Great AiMesh Router

Pros: - Stylish, looks fine sitting on a counter or book case, you can adjust the LED/light intensity or turn it off
- Asus AiMesh -- the mesh implementation from Asus and I am really suprised at how well it works.
- 4 Lan ports for wired connection while using AiMesh
- Performs above average for similar level/priced routers

Cons: - AiMesh can be cantankerous to setup, follow the instructions carefully and all should be ok.

Overall Review: - Would be better if they could make it even smaller, it is already small but smaller would be useful.
- Did not buy this through newegg but wanted to leave a review to counter some of the 1,2 star reviews which seem to be more complaints about dropped connections and such, I had no such issues and typically I find dropped connections even on quality routers to be a client side problem (usually a RealTek WiFi module or chip) than the router itself.

Easy setup but fails over time

Pros: - Quick Setup
- Firewall using TrendMicro
- Looked Interesting with the design concept of extended range without the big antennas
- Owned for 5 months..

Cons: - Quick to having issues such as dropped WiFi connections, Network connection slow down (Started pulling in my full pipe @ 500mb/s and over time I am only getting 120mb/s which I just tested now)

- 5ghz starts to fail after about a month. When I connected devices it was fast and great, even was able to put an extender on as my Garage is set up 200ft behind the house and it worked great for a short time until the ASUS started showing SSID's but any device connected failed to stay connected or receive internet even when the WiFi signal says connected (no notice of Connected but no internet indication, etc)

- 2.4ghz worked the longest but started noticing drops and issues over time

- When using any Voice Software on this router to do VoIP, the entire network becomes slower than a snail sleeping. We tested it as I was on a VoIP call, the others that were watching Video's were buffering on a 500mb/s line and when we went to speedtest.net, the line said we had a 3mb/s connection.... - blinks - ... 3mb/s connection? Yeah... I laughed then screamed some curse words then plugged in my old (wont mention brand) router that gives us issues with connecting our TV but at least we get our 500mb/s and LAN devices connected oh and no slowness with VoIPing.

Overall Review: I tried returning the unit when I first started noticing the issues to see if I just received a failed unit, even order the extended 3 year warranty. When I first noticed these issues and put in a request, it said someone would get back to me. Since I am in the Tech industry, I don't have time to monitor but when I never received an email and checked my account the indication button said I could no longer return the item. - This is a no go for me, I am even a huge Newegg fan with a Personal & Business account so I am not sure who dropped this ball but I am not happy about it -

All in all, ASUS makes great Motherboards & their Graphics cards are well enough I never had an issue but this is the 2nd bad router I have had, 2 completely different models over the last 6 years. I wanted to give them a try again to see if things changed. I am sorry to say but they failed again.

Be mindful when buying, I would stick with a stronger brand if you want longevity and stability.

Looks nice and modern, but bad firmware.

Pros: Small foot print, modern design.

Cons: Device ended up bricking itself everytime it tried to update the firmware. It was getting a bit hot, wouldn't find all my devices on the network, even though they were wired in. Wifi devices constantly would disconnect and reconnect.

Overall Review: I was wanting to purchase this router as a replacement to my Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 which was a beast of a router. At any given moment, it would support between 20-30 devices ranging from smart speakers to security cameras to smart hubs. I had it for about 4 years almost and it finally started to drop wifi connections or would have to reboot the router once a week.

I decided to try out the new Asus router since I have had good luck with most of their equipment. And I was wrong.

Setup was very straight forward, hooked it up, powered it on. It launched a web page on the pc and walkthrough from there, setting up admin password, SSID, etc. But once it started downloading the firmware and applying it, it would reboot and state that it failed. I was messing with it for about 30 minutes trying to get it to work. Using the default password to reset it..etc.. I didn't want to call Asus tech support since they would just have me power it on/off factory reset the unit...blah blah blah. So I ended up returning it to a brick and mortar store I purchased it from and went back to the Netgear Nighthawk.

Modern and Effective

Pros: For many years, I limped along relying on the Fios router as my WiFi access point. The AC2600 is a huge leap forward. It is beautifully packaged; no porcupines in the living room. It is effective; both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios work well. The web-based configuration utility built in works well, is logically organized and supports the initial and advanced setup smoothly. Upon initial connection (wired to my PC), the Asus immediately asked to do a firmware update; this worked perfectly. The WiFi does require that each radio (2.4 or5 GHz) be individually configured. You have the option of using the same or different WPA2 codes for the radios. The configuration can be saved to a file or your PC (or phone). I saved separate files with and without the Guest WiFi network enabled. I have a one-story house and the signal is strong throughout the first floor and basement. With 2.4 G, I have 4 full bars on my phone everyplace; max about 50 feet in a walk around. At 5 G using a Win 10 laptop with a new Asus miniature USB adapter, I maintained 867Mb/s on the first floor and dropped to about 390 Mb/s in the basement at the limit of my house (about 50 feet from the Asus AC2600.

This was money well spent. I most strongly recommend this product.

Cons: None that I can find so far.

Overall Review: I was given the option of automatic or manual configuration of the connections. If using a Fios modem/router like the Actiontec, I recommend choosing the Manual and setting the WAN to Static, not DHCP. Also, be sure to APPLY any settings and WPA2 codes separately. If you enter the 2.4 GHz wifi values, switch tabs to set 5 GHz and then apply, only the last set of values is loaded to the AC2600. Waiting for each screen or tab to apply to the AC2600 is the only slight annoyance, and not enough to deduct an egg.

ASUS BLUE CAVE is my home internet solution, and why it should be yours too?

Pros: +Connection is stable, consistent data processing and movement in the network
+Takes up HALF the space of most normal routers and no more falling antennas!!
+Great Aesthetics and friendly ASUS UI
+Easy setup for the beginner, with advanced settings for pros
+Cool and adjustable LED lighting
+Ai-Mesh enabled, finally!

Cons: -Power dongle is a 90 Deg angle on router connection and could turn off the power if you move the router
-price is a bit high but you get what you paid for

Overall Review: ASUS GREAT job on this router, it looks great and works even better and it is at the right price! We need more of these types of routers! I hate all the routers with more than 3 antennas and really the ONLY advantage to antennas is to be able to move them around for a bit more precise control of directing the signal, there is very little to GAIN by having them sticking out.

This router is perfect for the normal sized home, and once AI Mesh is incorporated into it then it will be the perfect base station for the extenders. For the price, it is really a great deal, most other routers are more expensive and have terrible user interface, plus many other brands of routers will disable your network with a loss of internet! ASUS keeps on cruising!

will share more experience along the way :-)

Good features and performance, spoiled by defective firmware and broken promises from ASUS

Pros: (1) Good wireless coverage in our setting, reached 30 feet through 2 walls
(2) Good traffic monitoring and security features
(3) The company answers phone calls and says they will take action on problems
(4) The company sends friendly emails (“Welcome to be ASUS Account!” [sic])

Cons: (1) Front of router gets very hot along bottom edge. Had to prop it up on blocks and tilt it back to get more air underneath router for circulation. (High temperatures generally don’t coincide with a long-lasting consumer electronic product.)
(2) Firmware programming defects hinder use of features.
(3) Network Map incorrectly shows wireless devices other than computers as being on Ethernet connection.
(4) Traffic Analyzer did not work when first turned on, requiring an agreement with Trend Micro, but the button for that did not work or give an error message. The same agreement was required in another screen and its button worked, then the Traffic Analyzer worked. Clearly a firmware defect!
(5) “Administration – Feedback” page does not work – 3 dropdown boxes and “Send” button broken.
(6) Help & Support “Manual” and “Utility” buttons at bottom of router webpages do not work.
(7) QoS - Web History “Refresh” button does not work right – blanked screen until Web History screen was closed and then reopened.
(8) Web History shows access time in random order, with no apparent way to sort.
(9) Number of network clients on “View List” fluctuates, sometimes showing clients not currently connected and sometimes briefly dropping out connected clients. Resets occasionally to remove clients not connected.

Overall Review: This ASUS Blue Cave router was ordered from Newegg 7/19/18 (Order # 433959171) and placed in service July 29, 2018. It was needed to replace a Netgear WNDR3700 whose radio section had failed. I also needed better monitoring of bandwidth usage, which some ASUS routers seemed to offer. I picked this one because it had an Intel chipset, hoping for better reliability than the chipsets in other ASUS routers. The styling was of no interest to me.
The physical performance met our needs, but the firmware was and still is very buggy as described above. After a long string of communication with multiple ASUS people and case numbers starting on August 6, 2018, firmware fixes promised for some of the above problems are still not out as of Sept 24, 2018. Specifically, ASUS emails gave commitments including "Please allow us 24-72 hours to complete this. I will definitely provide you an update within the time frame." (Jhed C. Sat, Aug 11, 1:29 AM) (Never heard back) and "...your case is now being reviewed by our product engineers. We appreciate your patience and expect updates within 24-48 hours starting from the day this case is forwarded to our engineers." (Alexis G., Mon, Aug 13, 11:12 AM and 11:15 AM). Follow-up to this was from Tehjmar H. on August 16, 8:19 AM: "Traffic Monitor FAQ has been updated and will be working again after a day or so. . . . The URL Sorting is by design, not using time and there's no plan adding this option at this time. ... [Traffic Analyzer] problem has been verified and will be addressed with the next firmware." So far none of the promised fixes have shown up, as the firmware check on Sept 24, 2018 showed the same firmware as received on July 29th (Version 3.0.0.4.384_32546).
For reference, the case numbers generated by ASUS were: N1807114565 (phone call); N180834942; N180835663; N180841615; N180846842; N180849967; N180854951; N180872197; N180872903. The ASUS personnel responding to the phone calls were Sean, Mark and Jerome. The ASUS personnel responding to the emails were: Jahvon L., John S, Alexis G., Jhed C., Tehjmar H., and Mario M.
Conclusion: ASUS people are very polite and responsive to emails and phone calls though their English is limited, but no problems we discussed got fixed.
If ASUS responds to this review, I will simply point them back to the promises they made in the above case numbers. Meanwhile I recommend anyone considering the Blue Cave router wait until ASUS fixes the overheating issue and the firmware bugs.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Ron,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and I am sorry to hear about all the issues you've mentioned that you are having with the router. I can definitely understand how inconvenient it must be having to live with the options and features being buggy as you mentioned. With our team already made aware of those issues, we can only wait until they've completed their list of improvements and fixes to provide an update. What I can do is to request an update or timeline on when the update should be ready if possible. I would also like to help you have the router sent in to our Service center so that we can look into the heat issue you mentioned. For further assistance you can email us at customerloyalty@asus.com and use the link to this review as a reference. I do look forward to working with you and please have a great day.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

The Blue Cave AC2600 is a remarkable router and deal

Pros: +Consistent data processing and movement in the network
+Takes up HALF the space of most normal routers, and no more falling antennas!!
+Great Aesthetics
+Awesome ASUS GUI
+Easy setup for the beginner
+Advanced settings for pros
+Much more powerful signal than the ASUS AC2400
+Cool and adjustable LED lighting

For those of you that have issues with routers dying, I suggest you buy a laptop cooling pad and place the router on one of those. Heat buildup due to lack of airflow is the number one enemy of electronics. I purchased this Router from another place, but I wanted to spread my great experience about this router to everyone else because it has no reviews. ASUS you should really do more with the NEWEGGSPERT program and work on your customer service RMA process for customers.

My AC2400 was about 2.5 years old and there have been a lot of advances with routers since then. I was having lots of issues with that router being able to give me consistent and high data flows on my network and I had a feeling it was either starting to fail or it was a limitation of the chips in the router.

So, I took a chance and bought this router and it really is a great bargain!! You are getting a 3-core Intel processor that seems to really be able to handle the workloads. The 3rd core is supposed to be dedicated for VoIP use. Please note that The ASUS ROG 5400 Has a 4-core Intel, but all other ASUS routers use the Broadcom chips. This is Intel’s attempt to get into the market, and from what I can see they have done a really good job.

ASUS routers hands down have THE BEST GUI and ease of use over ANY other router I have ever used. As a Neweggspert I have tested a lot of routers! The mouse over help is good quick refence, but many of the people who put poor reviews simply do not know what they are doing. Immediately upon changing over to this router I notice a 15dbm gain in power! Which equates to over 10x the signal strength. Remember though we are talking a wireless signal that is prone to interference and we are in the milliwatt range. Real world performance for this router placed in a central location in my basement game me great coverage throughout my 1500 square foot house. Currently this router does NOT include ASUS AiMesh networking, but it will be included in a future update.

During network saturation testing, I was able to fully use my 65 Gb/s from the internet (2xUHD Netflix) and MAX out my plex server to every device I own plus another another 3 local computer streams. It handled everything perfectly, with zero issues. My plex server can put out about 7 converted streams and I only saturated the 5ghz wireless about 50%.

That is AWESOME! I was able to set my Plex server to High quality instead of speed and now my wireless video is as good as my wired video, I was never able to do that on my ASUS 2400. Video load times were minimal and kept under 5 seconds, even ff worked perfectly!!Computer to computer and internet downloads were able to max out with rock solid consistency.

Cons: Cons
-Power dongle is a 90 Deg angle on router connection and can turn off the power if you move the router.
-Currently does not support ASUS AI Mesh networking
-No manual included in the box, just quick setup
-ASUS and the whole computer industry need to seriously work on customer service in this internet age, especially RMA service. You should all look at Motorola, their service system is EXEMPLARY!

That is really about all there is for the cons.

Overall Review: Other thoughts.
ASUS GREAT job on this router, it looks great and works even better and it is at the right price! We need more of these types of routers! I hate all the routers with more than 4 antennas and really the ONLY advantage to antennas is to be able to move them around for a bit more precise control of directing the signal, but that is the ONLY benefit to them, there is very little to GAIN by having them!!

ASUS keeps on cruising!

UPDATE: 5/26/2018
A new firmware was released a day or two ago, and you must Manually download it! I highly recommend it, because has numerous vulnerability fixes. Hopefully it fixed the WI-Fi dropping issues because there were also some bug fixes that caused the router to lock up. It is much snappier that's for sure. I am still awaiting the AI mesh support for the router though :(

I am going to try out the IFFTT functions soon, I will report on them as soon as I can.

Feel free to ask me any questions and please rate up this review.
