False advertising and failed drive

Pros: When it worked, it was awesome

Cons: Advertised picture was not what the drive itself looked like
Failed after a year of use
LOUD when spinning up

Other Thoughts: Bought one of these drives since it was a good deal at the time. Very disappointing that it looked NOTHING like its promo picture, and then failed after a year. Will read cd/dvd's, but when I go to burn one, it always tells me that any disc I put in it is invalid. ASUS would not RMA it and said "not all product imagery is acurate" (which if that's the case, then DON'T RELEASE IT!!!), which means I probably won't ever get another ASUS product if this is the kind of support I get.

Too bad Newegg doesn't have a way to post pictures with reviews or I could post a picture of what was advertised vs. what was actually sent.

read this !!!

Pros: First off I just want to say to the people who say it won't work! You obviously have no idea what your doing and have a lot to learn. You need special codecs and programs that allow you watch blu rays.if you search hard enough actually it's very simple but to you if your not able to watch its generally going to be a tough process but you need to obtain certain programs (arcsoft total media theatre) :)which you will need to buy unless one again you search hard enough you will learn how to obtain these. Anyway than to burn you will need to do the same!I however will recommend dvdfab I have never had a single coaster burning any blu rays or dvds .If you have coasters check your burning speeds:) I've never really had a coaster since cd burning became huge! Last thing I buy optical quantum blu rays 50 pack for 30 off newegg they are 25gb bit I can easily fit movies on the disc with dvdfab if you know what your doing:)

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: Stop thinking the world is made easy and everything is handed on a gold platter

Firmware?

Pros: I just bought this drive a few days ago and installed it in my computer. I booted my PC up and it said it successfully recognized the Blu-ray drive. I then proceeded to putting a Blu-ray in. It would not play. Tried downloading VLC player because I have played Blu-rays in the past with it in my laptop. Still not playing. I took the only disc that came with the drive put it in, installed Power2Go and then it took me to the Asus website. I searched for the firmware for my driver clicked the drop down box to select my OS and there were NO OS's to select from. Any ideas?

Cons: Can't get it to play Blu-rays. Most posts says Windows 7 should get it working automatically (plug and play) but it doesn't seem to be like that.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Valued Customer,

If the OS drop-down list is blank, then there may not be any firmware or downloadable updates available at this moment. To run and play Blu-ray movies, I suggest you visit Download.com and type-in “Blu-ray” in the search box. You can download and install free trial versions of Blu-ray programs from several, different manufacturers out there and then decide which one you believe is more user-friendly. The cost will vary depending on the features included in their bundled suite, so please look for the manufacturer’s comparison chart for details. If you require further assistance, please reach out to me at cl-celeste@asus.com and include case#2837611 in the subject line.

Sincerely,
Celeste

It works on Linux

Pros: It works on Linux (MEPIS 11 a Debian based distro). Using k3b and Cdrecord I burned over 50 discs (RiDATA - BD-R SL, BD-R DL, DVD+R SL, DVD+R DL) without a single coaster.

I did not try playing a Blu-ray Video disc in this drive and I did not use the software that was included with the drive.

Cons: None.

Excellent bluray burner

Pros: Excellent, plays blurays fine, used potplayer which is free software. Just plays the main movie. If you want menus, you'll have to use other software.
I have burned Verbatim 25GB 6X BD-R Model 97457 at 6x and 8x using Imgburn which is also free. Works flawless at both those speeds, I'd stick to 6x though, very high burning speeds you might run into buffer issues. Also have burned DVD-R at 8x with no issues at all.
This is my first Bluray Burner, with the cost of bluray discs being so cheap now, compared to dvd-9s, actually if you look around DVD-9s may be more expensive then 25gb BD-Rs, go figure........and with the uncertainty of hard drives nowanddays, no one can take the chance, hard drives are good backup methods, but really you should also use bd media if you really care about your data. Kept in the right condition discs can last, I have tested dvd-rs I have burnt in 2003, 10 years later they work flawless, this is kept in mint condition. So the media does last. For the price, and the price of BD-Rs theres no reason not to do bluray backup.

Cons: none as of yet.

Other Thoughts: Asus has not added firmware as of this date, but I'm sure that will come later.

ASUS!!

Pros: I don't yet own this Blu-ray player but plan to buy it. Since NewEgg does not allow comments or replies yet to reviews (which a competitor does, btw) I have to make mind this way. First off, ASUS is a extremely good brand. They have made some of the very best motherboards for years - I've used them in most of my home built computers. They make great video cards, monitors and DVD disc drives.

The issue I have with the reviewer blaming this ASUS Blu-ray drive player for not being able to successfully complete a disc is that disc media varies considerably between brands. I've found Verbatim disc media to be the best, period. At least with my SONY and ASUS disc burners, Verbatim as been the best. Verbatim is usually a bit more expensive than other brands but if you don't burn coasters with them, then they actually become cheaper in the long run. Verbatim is the ONLY brand I will use for dual layer burning. I've tried a few other brands and always had issues. Verbatim is so reliable that is will be the brand I buy for Blu-ray when I purchase this ASUS Blu-ray burner. For single layer burning Memorex has been a good cheap alternative but I actually buy only Taiyo Yuden for that now. As with the Verbatim for dual layer burning, as a single layer disc Taiyo Yuden almost never fails to finish a burn session.

So, my argument here is that the media one reviewer here is using is NOT the best, and may actually be the problem as to why he cannot get a good burn. The ASUS Blu-ray drive is not the problem, IMO. Try some Verbatim Blu-ray discs and see if that doesn't make all the difference.

Cons: Some reviews here fail to be helpful and/or accurate about the problems a user is experiencing. NewEgg needs to allow user replies to reviews so that some things can be set straight. A product should not suffer a bad review when it may not be the real problem.
