I was just wondering if this dvd drive is supposed to come with mounting brackets or not also if it is supposed to come with cables or not?

No brackets, but it slides right into a standard media bay in computer cases. Also, no SATA wire is included, so youll need to make sure you've got one to connect to your motherboard, as well as a SATA power cord from your power supply.

Will this drive work with any ASUS mobo that has Sata?

It should work with any SATA connection. Unless you have a RAID array/s setup for Harddrives, you may need to pay attention to which SATA ports are connected for HDD and those for other SATA peripherals such as your DVD drive.

is this cd-rom silent?

I only use it to rip CDs a dozen times a year. I don't remember it being especially silent or noisy. Pretty standard fast-rotational CD drive sound. Still reliable though. Especially for as little as I use it.

Question 4

Does this drive come with the required sata cable to plug it into the motherboard and actually use the CD drive or do you have to buy the cable separately?

As with most aftermarket accessories these days, you will have to have your own Sata cord and Power plug in ( get a splitter if your current case doesn't have enough connectors available.)  Has worked great so far though,  No problems

Was  it necessary to install a driver for this device? If so, where can I find the download?

I didn't need a driver. I was trying to fresh install Windows 7 from a DVD, but the install kept failing with my previous DVD-R drive. Once I swapped it out for this one it worked fine, and it continues to read without any special driver installation. I bought this particular drive because it was simple and I was trying to narrow down where the install failure was happening. My motherboard is also Asus (ASUS M4A785-M) so I'm not sure if that matters. Hope this helps!

Can I burn dvd's with this?

Hi Brendan:  I cannot answer your question.  My son builds our computers, orders the parts and I pay for the parts.  I don't do anything but operate the On/Off switch to the computer.  He tells me we need to buy so and so, I say order and I pay.  Also my son is the administrator of my computer.  I am really sorry I cannot help you.  I just paid for:
ASUS RT-AC88U Wireless AC3100 Dual-Band Gigabit Router, AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security which will operate 2 computers, 2 printers, and a server.
According to my son, This Asus Router is the best on the market at this time.

What would the supported operating systems be?

I'm no expert, but it should be supported by any version of Windows (Windows 98 to Windows 8). Any version of Linux should also be fine. Does this answer your question?

will this unit work as a replacement for atapi dvd a dh16a6s used in a gateway dx4200-09 desktop computer?

Only IF you've got SATA connectors on your motherboard. I replaced my motherboard and found out that atapi connections are now obsolete. So, as per usual, that led to a number of other upgrades like this one. But this is a good drive that is quiet and cheap.

It's worked fine in a desktop for me. I'm sure if you have the correct Sata to USB cable and a Sata power cable it would work externally, but this definitely won't fit internally if that's what your thinking
