no, it comes with the cable. the cable uses two USB ports. it may be hard to use in laptop. I suggest you to buy Samsung which uses one USB port.

I don't have this item in my possession any more, but when I had it I was positively impressed by its stability and absence of rattles. It is a lot nicer than my LG drive, and I would recommend it.

I just bought  Acer V 15 without dvd/cd  drive
Now I want to add portable external dvd/cd drive to copy my files and to install new software. would you suggest one?

The first one I bought was a LG slim external drive, and it rattles a lot while it is working.  This one is bigger and quieter.  They both have trouble opening very large files.  I think that you get what you pay for with external drives.  I think this one would be sufficient for simple file copying, and would probably install your software.  If you have any major software on a DVD, I would suggest copying it onto your desktop temporarily before you run it.

can this drive write to 25GB M-Disc?

The largest capacity DVD disc, I know of is the DVD+/- Dual Layer Disc, which is 8.5Gb and your question pertains to a 25 Gb disc which I suspect is a single layer Blu-Ray HD Disc(BRDL's are 50 Gb). If that's the case, then no, since this is a DVD Writer, not a Blu-Ray Writer.

So far, haven't found a DVD that would work- but only software and movies... haven't tried any games. I would be concerned about the lag time for any USB interface device while playing a game.
