There's a cable that connects from them Motherboard to the card.  It's called the Thunderbolt header 5pin on the x99 Motherboard. It looks like it will work with the TUF X299 MARK 1 but not the other models

Is this card compatible with Asus Z-97 A?

as long as the MB has a TB Header (thunderbolt header) and PCI Express 3.0 x4 it should be compatible. I have an asus z170 and it took a little setting up in the BIOS to get it working.

Will this card work in a  HP Next Gen i7 desk top computer?

What's the motherboard model? Is there an available expansion slot? As long as the mobo is compatible (you can check your mobo model with this card on the ASUS website) and you have an expansion slot, it should be fine. Note that you not only connect the TB card to the TB header of the mobo (inside the casing), but you also run the DisplayPort cable from the mobo graphics card port to the TB card (this is outside the casing). If you are running Linux and not Windows, check to make sure the TB drivers have been included in the kernel version; last time I checked, TB support was lagging a bit, but that might have been fixed over the last year. Good luck!! (It also took me a bit to get the driver's running properly in Windows 10; even now, if I turn on a TB-connected device, I have to put the silly thing to sleep for a moment and resurrect it to have the TB device detected).

is this an alpine ridge controller usb type c? im looking at a universal audio interface for my speakers and instruments and the requirement is to have a motherboard that has usb type c alpine ridge controller on the mobo itself. they said they just couldn't recommend anything else. would this card perform any differently compared to it being being native on the mobo?  i have the sabertooth x99 board and it is listed as compatible.

the mobo needs a TB Header (thunderbolt header) and the PCI slot needs to be set up to accept thunderbolt expansion in that slot
