Does this keyboard only come in a red glow? Can you change the color of the backlight easily?

Just red.  You can increase or decrease the brightness I think by three steps. Or you can turn the light off altogether. If the light is on and the keyboard is not used for a while the light will go off by itself.

Question 2

Can it play Blu-ray movies out of the box?  Whats the media software for it?

Accepted Answer

No. Because of Windows 8/8.1, microsoft has made it where you have to purchase seperately windows media center to play any outside media. However, there are MANY other software's out there (Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra 14) that are way better than windows media center. And yes, it plays Blu-ray too. Plus includes all kinds of surround sound plug ins as well. Don't be sticker shocked, it will set you back about $80 bucks.

Other than that and a few other things associated with Windows 8/8.1, this is an AWESOME system!!!!!!

BTW- if you want windows 8 to function like Windows 7, install (Startmenu 8) from cnet under downloads. NOW, be careful when installing. Dont just click install, read the terms because cnet like to sneak in a lot than what you want per ad contracts.

Is the battery removable?

The battery is not removable from anyway that I can see.   The manual also specifically states that if there is a problem with the battery to call ASUS.

does this come with an ethernet plug ??

Yes it has an ethernet slot on the right side next to the VGA slot. (If you were asking about an ethernet cable, no, it does not include the actual cable.)

Yes.  It also is a one of the latest cards.

GTX 980M vs GTX 970M SLI.  Which is better for gaming?  Don't care for artificial benchmarks.

I would avoid the SLI option personally. SLI support in games is historically iffy as the game has to be designed in a way that supports it. The extra heat and power management issues associated with a dual card mobile setup can be troublesome, and will almost certainly mean you will have a machine that runs loud and hot. Laptops with thermal management issues are more likely to fail (fans constantly running at higher rpms, components consistently exposed to their thermal limits, etc...)

Background Info: IT Systems Engineer who designs enterprise level virtualization environments who has been playing video games for just shy of 3 decades (and I now suddenly feel old after realizing this)

Is the OS (8.1) installed on the 1 TB HDD or the 512 GB SSD?

Mine came with Windows installed on the first partition of the SSD.
The partition scheme from the factory was like this: SSD (190GB and 256GB with the rest in a hidden partition) HHD (465GB and 465GB with the rest in a hidden partition). I don't know why they split it up so much as access time is not an issue with this laptop. It's fast.

Question 8

So many important ports are on the right side of the laptop (HDMI, Audio, AC) that would leave many wires in the space that you would use a mouse. Does this happen, and does it bother you?

On the opposite side (left side) of the HDMI, Audio, Either and AC ports, are two USB ports. I use wireless mouse and keyboard and their two nano receivers go in these ports. Eliminates two extra wires. Of course you can use the PC's keyboard and finger pad. Both are large and easy to use.
