Where would you locate this in conjunction with the router?

It only "needs" to be plugged in near the router for the initial setup. After that, the manual suggests operating it from the most remote location in the house with a strong signal. There are three bars on the unit to indicate signal strength; I have mine upstairs at the opposite end of the house from my main router and get three bars there.
