Yes, but any issue is really between the modem and Comcast, not the router since it sits after the modem.  Anyway, I am using this router and I have Comcast Xfinity.

Mine came in an unlabeled white box, and I do not recall any cables aside from the power one. I don't recall a CD either, but all of the software is available from ASUS' website

I would assume Asus refurbished the units themselves. I have been using my refurbished unit for the last 6 months with no problems at all so whoever does refurbished them does a good job I think.

i still have some legacy b/g/n wifi is this ac router backward compatible with those devices?

Yes, but putting old devices (especially B) will slow your newer devices down considerably. Consider putting legacy devices only on the 2.4GHz network and using only the 5GHz network with newer equipment like newer phones and laptops. This way the legacy devices will only slow down your 2.4GHz network and your better devices can have more in the 5GHz band.

do I need an additional modem to use this on DSL?

Yes!  You can not plug this router into the phone jack.  You plus this router into the modem.  Typically, your internet provided will give you a modem to plug into their telephone jack.  BTW, the particular recertified unit I received was flawless and appeared new, and has worked fine for the fair number of months I have had it.

Is this the same router as the RT-AC66U? Is the U replaced with the R only to show its refurbished?

It is the same router, and runs the same firmware.  The firmware update to the U model worked fine also.

I hear that the major issue people have with these is due to the new Broadcom chipset running too hot. Some folks have reported no problems, once they found a way of cooling it. Is there a recommended cooling solution for this?

It is good to know about this. I don't know about this issue. I turned it on 24 hours, 7 days without problems. I touch outside of the unit, it is warm, not hot. I hope you feel safe to purchase one.

Anyone know if this is compatible with AT&T UVerse (in LA area)?

That is my configuration. You just need to put your att modem into bridge mode or set the port to DMZ mode for the router. I like it.

It shows Product ID is RT-N66R not RT-AC66R in admin page.
Please advise whether it is normal or something wrong?

The RT-N66R is a different model than the RT-AC66R that only supports 802.11n wireless speeds. See Asus website product pages for more details.

What is the firmware version on this specific router I ordered?

The firmware will most likely vary based on manufacture date. It is fully compatible with the latest asus firmware package for the RT-AC66U (same router) which as of 2 weeks ago was 3.0.0.4.374.4561.
