Question 1

I saw the dimensions on the website, but they don't appear to take the antennas into account.  Can someone measure the router's length x width x height and report please?  I have a very tight space to put this in.  Thanks in advance.

The dimensions with the Antenna's attached are:
Side to Side including antennas - 12 inches. It is a Square and the height with the antennas attached is 6.5 inches.

Question 2

I currently have a Linksys WRT1900AC, Is it worth upgrading to this router? I currently have PCE-AC68 for my PC for wireless internet.

If you plan on expanding your network I think this is the best option available. I have the same Asus wireless card connected to my desktop around 20 feet away and I get blazing speeds. I connect at around 1300mbps per second and when I transfer files over my LAN, I can usually hit around 75-80MBps. Keep in mind this thing will push 3 times that if you have multiple SSID setup and are using them. I have no lag when gaming, my kids can watching netflix, I also have a two servers connecting with intel NICs with no sign of any bottlenecks on my network. I also have around 10 other devices being used at the same time on the network. Hope this helps!

Question 3

I noticed on the pictures that this has a fan.  Can you hear the fan?  If so, how loud is it?

Wow...I never knew it had a fan until you asked this question.  I Googled it after I saw your question.  Found a web site that did a teardown of this router, and it does indeed have a fan!

I've never hear any noise at all coming from this router, and since I never realized it had a fan I guess that shows how quiet the fan is!

Question 4

I'm upgrading to this router, what modem would be most compatible?

A better question would be : 'Which modem is most compatible with __[My Internet Service Provider/Cable company]__?' I have this router along with a number of other high end router. This is a good router. It will be compatible with most anything with a clean Ethernet port to route to. And it will handle most anything thrown at it. Its probably the fastest consumer router out there now.  Performance will ultimately depend on the speed of the link between the router and the internet. And just because a modem is on a cable companies approved list does not mean it is the best performer for your location and tier of service. Sad but true.....

Will the ASUS RT-AC5300 Wireless AC5300 Tri-Band Gigabit Router, AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security work with a windows vista computer?

I'm not 100% sure but it works with my oldest device, an old e machine with the old WiFi protocol.  This was a win 7 up to win 10.  I suspect Asus support can answer.  It is a good modem with good range.

Question 6

I have Verizon Fios internet 150mbs/150mbs; however with FIOS i have to utilize their cable router/modem.  Is this compatible with Verizon FIOS; if so how does it work without the Verizon-provided modem/router?

All wireless routers are compatible with FIOS. However, getting them to work requires a little bit of network knowledge and configuration. The FIOS unit you have is a cable modem, router, and WAP all wrapped into one. You only want to use the cable modem functionality, but there is no way to do this without come relatively simple configuration changes.

What you want to do is put the router in the FIOS DMZ, which will route everything to it (simple config change in the FIOS unit). Personally, I would disable DHCP on the FIOS unit (which means you will use a static IP on the WAN port of the AC5300). I would also disable the wireless on the FIOS unit.

You can then connect wired devices directly to the router, and configure the router's wireless to your whatever you like. I know several people who do this and they say it works fine. I do not have FIOS, so I cannot give you the granular instructions/settings. You should be able to Google them if you are unfamiliar with them - honest, it is pretty simple. Should take you 5 minutes.

Does anyone who owns this router use a different wireless adapter brand with router? For example: Can you use a Netgear wireless adapter with this Asus router? Our Netgear router no longer works so I have a wireless antenna I plug into the USB connection on my workstation and I'd love to avoid using a new wireless adapter just for a router.

I am using various adapters with this router. Running 802.11AC.  I have  Netgear, Linksys, Engenious, and TP-Link USB 3.0 adapters, and they all work fine.  I have both Windows and Macs, no issues. Hope this helps.

Question 9

We have Time Warner Cable Internet running at 50Mbps download speed max. All connections are hardwire LAN, no wireless.  Don't like it, don't use it.  We on line game and Netflix, that's it, pretty much.  Since my downloads are maxed at 50Mbps, am I thinking correctly that this router is serious overkill for us?  Especially since we don't do wireless? And we max out at 50Mbps?

I've been really pleased with router. If there is a bummer about it, its huge. I'm not sure what they mean about 5334 Mbps wireless speed. To my knowledge there is no wireless card out there that can do that. All of my online gaming and Netflix, ETC are wired, rock solid connection. The wireless is really stable. The size of it may be a issue, It does look like the Borg in Star Trek would make. I would say go for it.

Does this hook up to my parents satellite internet box or does this come with something else, or how do I hook it up without hooking it up to theirs?

This is just a glorified home router with built-in wireless, nothing more. You would use and connect it just like any other home router. It requires an standard RJ45 ethernet connection on the uplink port - this is typically provided by a cable modem or (if you are really unlucky) DSL connection.

I have never used satellite internet, so I am unsure of the hardware. However, I would assume the box has a port to connect to a computer that is RJ45 (standard network cable). Instead of connecting this cable to the computer, you would connect it to the uplink port on the router, and then connect your computer to one of the ports on the router.

This is a very advanced router compared to many on the market, and if you have to ask such basic questions I am concerned that your level of knowledge is not ready for this router. It has a crapton of features that you would either never use or possibly not understand. Granted, you could keep everything default, but I wonder if you really need such a monster. You might be better off getting a "normal" router in the $100 range, watch some setup videos, learn about the various features, etc., and then upgrade to this router if you feel you need it.
