It's a MIMO 2x2 with dual bands, in theory you could get 867 Mbps on the 5 Ghz band and 400 Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz band. To achieve those numbers you'll need a wifi device that is also capable of those types of connection speeds, as well as the perfect download test point. If you're paying for 500 Mbps service, this router will be more than sufficient for streaming in a smaller space. The farther away from the router and more obstructions of course you will have signal degradation and lose those higher speeds.

Yes, the standard Asus firmware includes openvpn both server and client. I use openvpn to get access to my internal network while away from home.

Adding wifi with a wireless router to your existing network is not “usually” an extra charge if you already have wired internet access. It will depend on your local internet provider.

Would this router provide coverage into my yard (3400 sq ft home) with being located in the basement? This is my current issue with my router we are using now.

General Rule; Most newer routers have about an average of 150 foot radius using 802.11 n 2.4GHz (802.11 ac 5GHz is Less Range), that is at full strength, NO WALLS or Obstacles.  Adding a few walls or upstairs/downstairs between you and the router usually knocks the signal strength down half or more. ALWAYS have one router per floor.
I have a single story 1900 sq foot home and run two routers, this AC1300 and an AC3200.  The AC3200 is in the center of our home and the AC1300 (Access Point) is closer to the back of our home and covers our backyard great.  I recommend connecting at 2.4GHz outdoors if you are lacking signal strength.

Setting this router up as an Access Point is extremely easy.
