Crash A Lot 9/1/2020 10:22:35 AM

Pros: Looks killer, plenty of ports

Cons: Crashes a lot. Asus says its temperature but it's in air conditioned house. Stay away from this model.

DO NOT BUY - WILL REBOOT NO MATTER THE FIRMWARE 8/29/2020 1:57:35 PM

Pros: - When it works, this router has a lot of options/ports/10gbe/etc, but that's all useless because it reboots every couple hours.

Cons: This router cannot stay on longer than 48 hours before constant reboots. I have tried the last three versions of their firmware and ALL of them cause this issue. I have even tried not changing a single setting other than the name of the wifi, still crashes and reboots within 48 hours. Nothing helps, there's nothing that will fix it. Once it starts doing this, it will keep going all day (every 1-15 min) until you reinstall the firmware again and you're good for about 48 more hours.

For the record, I had an Asus router before this one (a basic one, ASUS RT-N56U) and I had it for eight years with ZERO issues. Let that sink in, eight years and no issues. This current router needs more attention than a new born baby and is a complete waste of every dollar it costs.

Overall Review: Avoid this like COVID-19. I can't stress this enough, this hardware is a paperweight and has sucked endless hours from my busy days working from home. Don't let this happen to you.

Dead on Arrival 8/8/2020 11:04:43 PM

Overall Review: First tried to register on ASUS site but it would not accept the serial number but recognized the model from the serial number so this was likely a return at some point. No lights/Could not connect from computer. It could be a bad power supply but it's going back as is. I've already wasted enough of my free time with this lemon.

Great router. Excellent signal and speed. 6/30/2020 7:50:34 AM

Pros: Great signal coverage.
Tons of firmware features you just don't see on other routers
Handled 25 connected devices well
No dropped signals or instability (if properly configured)

Cons: Firmware needs to mature
No Merlin compatibility, so stuck with Asus firmware
Has features that cause bugs in legacy connections

Overall Review: UPDATE2:
Have since purchased an ASUS AX wifi6 card and the difference is amazing. Average speeds in the network is 60-90MB/sec., which is far beyond our 400mbps internet speed. Cons below were addressed with the May 4 firmware, so a solid 5 star. Good signal, awesome speed, no dropped connections, it's a true beast. Still have not used it in a mesh system so that is an unknown for me, but maybe others can comment on that. We don't need mesh with this router.

UPDATE;
They released a new firmware on May 4. Added Smart Connect (probably helps with AiMesh). Also updated 160mhz instability, which was a problem I noted. Stable so far and faster.

Upgraded to this router from an RT-AC3100. Wanted to hold off on a new AX router for a while, but finally decided on this one. Coverage has been consistent with our old router, which was excellent. No problems on VPN connections. Have a NAS attached that works well with it. We cut the cord long ago and use about 1.5-2TB of internet a month with 20-30 devices connected. Does well. It is about 10MB/sec faster than my AC3100 router with file transfers to/from the NAS. Up from 30 to 40MB/sec. using a legacy AC USB PC adapter.

The only problem that I have encountered is with the firmware. Old router used Merlin firmware and was rock solid. Merlin does not support this router, so there are slightly less features . I have noticed instability when enabling 160mhz on the 2.4ghz band. Keeping AX features enabled did not cause any issues. Seems to be the 160mhz band option and/or DFS channels. Leave those off and it's solid and stable and still faster. QOS seems to work well if you let it run as adaptive. If you customize the settings, it can cause instability.

One other thing, as good as this router is, it may be more beneficial to wait yet another year for WIFI6e routers to hit the market. The 6ghz band will add more speed, coupled with the AX specs on packet efficiency there may be a much more significant speed boost with WIFI6e versus wifi6. It also appears that WIFI6e will require hardware changes, meaning there may not be a firmware update to this router to enable use of the 6ghz spectrum.

Almost Perfect Router 6/16/2020 7:21:45 PM

Pros: * Eight 1GB Ports, Plus 2 10GB ports. Probably thats the only one that has 10GB Ports. Perfect for NAS with matching ethernet speeds.
* Even ac WiFi is about 10-15% faster than with my old EA9500 MAX-Stream. About 630 Mbps from 30-40 feet away.
* WiFi 6- ax gives me about 750Mbps on 5GHz from about 25-30 feet away and about 500Mbps from about 60-70 feet away on a different floor. The numbers are given for 1000MBps provider plan.
* Covers 2500 sq feet house plus basement completely. No dead spots. The router is installed on the second floor
* A lot of configuration options for port forwarding, WAN port fail-over. virtual servers etc etc
* Scheduler to reboot itself
* Trend Macro internet security

Cons: Firmware (latest available at the moment - 3.0.0.4.384_81377) has some bugs related to DHCP. Somehow when you play with LAN dhcp settings, especially related to assigning reserved IP addresses the router randomly dropping WAN connection - yes i know it is unrelated, but that's exactly what happens. To fix it, open router admin interface - > click on WAN-> Enable WAN ->Uncheck ->Save->Check it back again->Save. Originally I was just rebooting the router, thinking that it is something else, till i figured out exactly what's happening.

Latest update. 6/15/2020
*******************************
Different devices keep loosing connection randomly. I suspect those with assigned IP addresses may be the culprit. Had to completely turn off 160 MHz. 2 times in last several weeks router completely stopped working and needed powercycling to restore. Using latest firmware ..81444. It reminded me why I went last time from ASUS to Linksys. Linksys worked literally for years without letting me know about its existence. Feel sorry about purchase.

Overall Review: I changed my review based on one week of testing. Taking down one Egg.
Assuming price range, the firmware should be flawless in such basic area as dhcp service stability. Definitely recommend it for 4k streaming and pc games enthusiasts, power users. Definitely future-proof with ax support and 10G ports. Not sure regular users will notice and appreciate the difference for the price paid.
