Question 1

I am using the on board video without using a video card- is it up to par, or do I need a separate v card- its not for gaming, just a fast, dependable office pc for my business.
i7 4790k, asus sabertooth z97 mark 1, 16 gb ram, 500 g ssd plus 1 tb wd black, lg super multi blue. Silverstone 08 htpc case(cause I like the profile)...
any thoughts ?

The Sabertooth Mark 1 is an excellent choice right now. Make sure when you get your new drivers from the Asus website you use the right ones. ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1/USB 3.1
I had problems with mine because I clicked on a link that said ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1, it needs to say /USB 3.1 behind it.
The i7 4790k is a great processor, It needs a heat sink. I recommend a prolimatech  megahalem, It will fit just fine as the 1155 is identical to the 1150 socket and its only $69.
 So far as fans I recommend a couple of PWM fans with high static pressure. Make sure the case is wide enough to find the cpu heat sink. And you need to have a PSU that is Haswell Certified.  Corsair makes a low profile ram 16gb, 8 gig sticks at 1866Mhz. Other than that everything looks it will work out, Lots of deals right now on SSD and Ram.

is this compatible with a i7 4th gen processor 4790k?

Yes it is compatible with that CPU. For an official list of supported CPUs visit ASUS' support site and look for 'CPU Support'.

Question 3

can i use faster ram, something like 2800 or maybe 2400. Am I understanding that this will not support anything faster than 1866!?

You can use faster RAM, but it will be limited to the speed that the CPU can access it, and this is where the 1866 limitation comes in.  The CPU and RAM (if supported by each manufacturer) can be over clocked to support higher speeds, but your milage may vary.

Will a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus fit on this board?

not 100 % sure about it looks it will work when i checked mine both look almost have same form factor, but i am using Corsair Air Series A70 Performance CPU Cooler CAFA70

Doe this mother board have a slot for SSD?

It does not have a slot like a laptop would if that is what you mean. but you can install a pci express ssd card if you are looking for more speed than sata. Hope that helps.

I would like to know specifics on what kind of HDD i need for this. looking for around 1TB. Internal HDD. i cant get a clear picture of which i should buy to fit this motherboard. What kind of specs should i look for? a 2.5" or a 3.5"?

That is more dependant on your case form factor.  There are connections for SATA drives so either 2.5 or 3.5 disks will connect and if you have the correct adapter, you can also use M.2 or mSATA disks as well.  How you mount the drives in the case is what you are looking for.

I have read where the Devils Canyon i7-4790K is not on the supported CPU list. Has anyone installed this cpu? successes or failures?

I've had it and the board installed for a few months now and running F@H on max settings 24/7 taxing all the 8 cores non-stop at 99% of capacity!
All cores are running between 68C and 72C at average 99% usage.
I'm using a Zalman CNPS9700 copper cooler in a Silverstone full size aluminum tower.
Not one single issue, yet.
Highly recommend the combination!
Use the "performance" settings in the BIOS, as well.

I have your Asus Sabertooth c97 mark 1. You recommend the Asus sabertooth listede above. Will it fit in the same space in my Corvair Carbide Series Air 540 case?

Should fit, to best of my knowledge. ATX MB, ATX case. If you selected Extended ATX motherboard, those would be too large.

I haven't really checked but I think it doesn't. However, you can always add one--either usb or pci.

Will this mobo work with an Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W Server Processor?

According to their product pages they are both Socket LGA 1150.
