Excellent box 3/15/2009 7:39:32 PM

Pros: Excellent construction. Smooth edges. Excellent attention to detail. PSU swings out to allow easy access to RAM and CPU. Bonus is the undocumented front card reader and USB ports. Rear USB and firewire make this a solid contender. I looked at Shuttle, but I'm very glad that I bought this. Running Untangle server software as a firewall for my home network. Very nice.

Cons: As other mentioned, the default voltage setting on the PSU is 230 Volts. Be sure to change it. This should not be happening for anything shipped to North America. Small issue, but be aware.

Overall Review: Would definitely buy again. This is not a cheaply made box. Very sollid and reliable. Minor issue on the PSU voltage. No other concerns. Performance has been excellent.

Not good 3/2/2009 1:54:39 PM

Pros: Small, clean, powered on, found connected peripherals, PCIe slot powered an overclocked 4670.

Cons: Processor support is pathetic. uCode errors with any of the newer 45nm processors. Website support doesn't list all supported processors while official bios update page says it "fixes" voltage issues with E8000 series... WHAT? So does it or doesn't it support 45nm? Apparently their official website notes are conflicted and the E8400 won't even post.
Official Intel chipset driver permanently broke the USB ports down to "standard" v1.1. Reinstallation of OS and other live CD's has show the ports to be permanently downgraded. Never have I had a part break because of an "upgrade" and not been able to recover with drivers or firmware... this is a 1st and unfortunately a deal-breaker for me and my company.

Overall Review: Tech support is insufferable. They are at least American, when you can get a hold of one. Trouble is they have no understanding of what is going on officially from Asus because they don't communicate! Wow, I have it saved that they do not know what is going on with Asus... straight from the mouth of their tech support. Kind of scary considering how Abit played the same game before leaving everybody high and dry.

Works Great with WHS 2/21/2009 9:23:04 PM

Pros: I bought this barebones kit to use some of the components I already had on hand to build a Windows Home Server. Upon opening the box I was impressed with the fit and finish of the kit.

As was stated before, make sure you switch the power supply over to 120 before attempting to power it up. Upon boot up the only issue I had was that I could not get past POST as the CPU I was using required a BIOS update. Luckily I had a USB drive handy that was formatted as a boot device. I loaded up the latest BIOS and Asus BIOS updating program on the drive and was off and running after the update. My advice, have either a floppy drive or formatted USB drive handy in case you initially have to update the BIOS.

-Top notch build quality.
-Inexpensive after rebate.
-Easy to work with inside.
-PCI _AND_ PCI-e 16x slots!
-Uses stand ATX power supply. Can be easily replaced if it dies or if the current PSU is underpowered for your uses.

Cons: -Uses non standard board. If the board dies the case is pretty much worthless unless you can find a replacement board.
-Required BIOS update to get past POST.
-No Intel driver for Windows 2003, which WHS is based on. Not really a big deal as I will be running it headless and the low resolution of the default Windows driver was fine for setup snd troubleshooting.
-No AHCI for the SATA ports. They are stuck running in IDE mode.
-Limited BIOS options.
-The only system fan is the one in PSU which used as an exhaust fan.
-Minimal documentation.
-Wish it was available in black.

Overall Review: Components: Intel E2180 w/ Speedstep enabled, Stock Intel heatsink, 2GB Mushkin RAM, 500GB WD5000AAVS, 750GB WD7500AACS, and 1TB WD10EADS. All are Green Power hard drives.

Temps are: CPU - 30C, Case - 28C, HDDs - 31 - 38C. Ambient temp is around 72F.

I ordered Sythe HDD Stabilizer 2 to use a hard drive in the 5.25" bay. So far the system has been running solid with no stability problems. Drives run kinda warm especially the one mounted in the 5.25" bay but nothing too serious. I will be adding a PCI slot exhaust fan to aid in pulling in cool air and removing warm.

I'll also be adding a PNY PCI-e 1x SATA card to add e-SATA ports for a Antec MX-1.

Cool little home server 2/18/2009 6:32:29 PM

Pros: Running great on Windows Home Server, an Intel E6600, 4GB G-Skill RAM, WD Caviar Black 1TB HD. Cool & quiet, the little Asus T3 sits in the corner and does its job. Front panel hides the handy USB and flash media ports. Great price. Add your components and fire it up!

Cons: Doesn't run final generation Intel 775 processors. Nothing to complain about.

Overall Review: Next generation T3 will be more powerful.

Not so great... 1/29/2009 4:57:45 PM

Pros: Decent price, small, and LOOKS nice. I def like how the front panel slides.

Cons: Out of the box it ran terribly slow with a P4 3.6 HT, 2GB of DDR2 667, and a SATAII hard drive. All of which where functioning fine before install. It may be the power supply not being strong enough, but why would they put one in that case that can't handle a basic setup? That sort of defeats the purpose of a barebones setup, right? Well, to top that off one the first time loading the Asus monitoring software it started with warning about the processor and motherboard overheating without ANY programs running. You can only fit the stock heatsink in there, so cooling it down isn't going to be easy. PS- you can't fit any fans in there either.

Overall Review: Doesn't really matter to me but- the Asus sticker fell off right out of the box and it seems like the sliding door is just waiting to get stuck or break.

Great Little Machine 12/19/2008 3:51:16 PM

Pros: Very simple, elegant design. Easy to put together. Contrary to some other reviews, this machine works perfectly with a E6600 Core 2 Duo. Popped in a MSI R4670-2D512 Radeon HD 4670 512MB in the available PCIe slot. Match it up with 2 GB DDR2 667 Crucial RAM and a 500GB Seagate 7200 RPM drive. Running XP - great little machine for a child.

Cons: Only complaints - Power supply is only rated 250W - 300W surge. A little misleading. Also - the power supply was set to 230VAC. No big deal..changed to 120VAC and waalaaa!

Overall Review: Self-inflicted pain...I also bought a CPU fan, MASSCOOL 8W553B1M3 90mm Ball CPU Cooler for the build. Unfortunately this heat sink requires a backing plate to be mounted to the underside of the motherboard. Definitely a better design than the stock Intel fan, however, I had to remove the motherboard to get access to the underside. Only four screws securing the MB, no big deal. Kind of glad I did it. NewEgg rocks!!!!!!

nice little machine 12/18/2008 10:15:49 AM

Pros: other reviewers are wrong,
both a P4-640 and a Core2 Duo E6300 worked fine no problem.
1066FSB is not OC like it says, it works stock.
runs silky smooth for Bluray with Radeon HD 3450 HTPC card.

3 SATAs are good, could use more RAM slots and 1333 FSB support ( which the later edition of the T3 has!)

love the front panel

Cons: no bios configs for overclocking

Beware of CPU compatibility list 12/2/2008 10:17:50 PM

Pros: Compact, nice finish, cute, two long sata cables supplied, overall workmanship appears good. Access to memory, CPU, and drives is ok to good, considering small size of case.

Cons: Does not support DuoCore CPU past E4600. Search Asus site for CPU compatibility list. Wish this was specifically stated in detail, wasted a lot time figuring out why a new CPU would not work. Basically you get a bios error and have to press F1 to continue to boot. DuoCore compatible, but not for all DuoCore CPU's, check list first.

Both units I've purchased have worked ok, but the first one had a SATA port failure within four weeks. Switched to a different port to solve the problem, but dissappointed this kind of failure occured so early.

Intel CPU fans never seem to install firmly on the first try, and usually take 3-4 attempts to get them to firmly attach. The four split pins that attach the fan to the MB are suppost to fan out once the exit the bottom side of the MB, but they always have trouble. Don't know if the MB is too thick or the Intel pins are not long enough. Always a pain to install, when it should just pop in like the CPU.

Overall Review: Like most websites, the ASUS site is not "post purchase support oriented". Finding and getting to information and downloads is slow and poor. They seem more interested in advertising rather then support. Yes the support is basically there, but only after some effort.
I wish there support area was like my experience with purchasing at newegg, where you can very rapidly drill down to the products of interest, do a quick compare and then buy, without clutter.
