does this come with a power charger?

Yes. It comes with a 2 amp wall adapter as well as a micro-USB cable. It can be easy to lose, though, so it's good to have a few extra lying around.

Would this be a good choice for my daughter to use for homework?  She does not want the bulk of a laptop and mainly writes papers and does research.  She will likely use it for Netflix also.

It's OKAY for doing school work. The keyboard that comes with it is small to fit the device, so typing at top speed is a little difficult. It also is limited to 802.11 a/g/n wifi, so not the greatest speeds. The keyboard has a single USB 3.0 port on it. The display is glossy, so it's difficult to see in bright light. And it's a fingerprint magnet.

All that being said, the device is really handy. I use it for school, and it's easy enough to pull it out and start typing (the 64 GB ssd really helps). It also has expandable storage through a Micro sd slot. I threw a 64 GB Sandisk sd card it it to double the capacity. The touchscreen is also really useful for scrolling through pages and quick zooming in and out. The processor is a little slow, but since the resolution is 1366x768, it's fine enough. It just means that she'll occasionally have to wait a few seconds. Still, the device is very responsive! And, oddly enough, this version comes with Windows 8.1 Pro. I upgraded to Win 10, and noticed I was running a Pro operating system. I just thought it was funny.  All-in-all, it should be fine enough for her to use as a school computer.

How much does this weigh, approximately?

About 3 lbs. My backpack flies through TSA screenings now. And it's a tablet so you don't have to bin it.

Yes. The laptop has Windows 8 installed,  and can be upgraded to Windows 10, which means any software can be installed like Skype, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

does this support an external drive? Can you add more memory?

The keyboard has USB 3.0 port and the screen has a micro USB 2.0 port so I don't see any reason why it would not. However it doesn't have a huge power output so you might need an external power source. I don't think you add any more RAM or SSD. The device is fully sealed so not really open to upgrades. It does has an Micro SD slot that supports upto 64gb cards. Note,  I ordered the version with 64gb SSD and once I had upgraded to Windows 10 and Office 365 there was only around 27gb left......so I think the 32gb version of this machine would be tight on space.....although 8gb is reserved for the backup partition which you could do away with if you had a Windows install source

Has a mini hdmi out connector so yes.  but not to standard connection like dvi .

National Academic refers to many things but concerning this unit, means it has Windows 8.1 PRO which enables Remote Desktop as well as domain joining. It also meets other requirements of a school for example, which would need computers to be able to join a domain and be part of a central system, in laments terms.
