can I use this if I'm building a custom pc?

The short answer is yes, if you’re including usb ports on your custom build. Not to sound harsh but if you know enough to build your own computer you should already know the answer. But just in case, you also need to have internet coming into your home and a router, preferably dual or triple band to take advantage of this product.

how does this product offer 867 mbps data speed over usb 2.0 which is capped at 480 mbps? does anyone have speed tests or proof that it actually goes at or close 867 mbps?  at least over 480 mbps?

I never clocked it so I don't know.

I did notice it was much faster than the 802.11 N built into the computer. I was only looking for increased speed, which it achieved.

There are so many factors involved in a WiFi setup and equipment that it would be foolish to spend much time agoniizing over an inexpensive part such as this one.

No but you should get a regular, usb 3.0 extension cable and it will work just fine. Honest from across the house plugged into a desktop computer on the floor, I still get great speeds and low gaming latency.
