Is this USB adapter compatible with a netgear router?

This unit is compatible with devices using either N-wireless signals.  Great adapter, does a excellent job pulling in and holding the signals.  Much better than the built in system.  It is in use daily.

can i plug it into usb 2 slots as well, since it says that it is made for usb 3 slots?

Yes, it will work fine. I have an older computer with usb 2.0 and this adapter works with no trouble.

I've yet to find any usb 3.0 device that wasn't backward compatible with usb 2.0.

The bigger concern is making sure there's a device driver for the OS version you are running.

Does this work with windows 10?

Yes. although when I went to install my free copy of windows 10, windows gave me trouble initially because it did not recognize the driver as windows 10 compatible, I can attest that it works splendidly with windows 10 and the latest drivers. just install over ethernet to avoid issues.

Does this adapter work with Windows 8.1?

The hardware itself works with the Windows 8 driver.  And Windows 8.1 handling of the wireless network works as well.  As for the utility/asus config software, I don't know if it does or not, because I don't like to install extra "stuff."

If i wanted to play something like League of Legends or what have you, could it handle it? will the ping spike horribly?

I have the ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router (RT-N56U) which is a really good router paired with this, but I can say after trying 2 different USB wifi adapters; a rosewill single band 802.11n and a Belkin Dualband 802.11n adapter. After having issues with them both whether it was slow speeds or lagging out I finally just ordered this and it has played every game I've thrown at it perfectly. World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV realm reborn, Counter Strike: Source, Left 4 Dead 2, and Risk of Rain and not once have I noticed lag. The first thing I did when I bought this was test it out on speedtest to make sure it was using my full bandwidth as well and it performed amazingly. Its really a great adapter.

While I stopped using the USB-N53 some months ago because I started using a new machine that has wifi;  last week I plugged it into a notebook computer with windows 10 Pro on it to connect a western digital My Passport wireless to my router.
Immediately upon plugging it in Windows 10 downloaded and installed drivers for this and I got a good wifi connection.
So the Wireless-N USB Adapter works with Windows 10 Pro.

I currently have the Cisco Linksys AE2500 Wireless-N USB adapter. It is really delicate (it's my second one, and if you bump into it, that's all she wrote, so I'm -2 now). If I get this ASUS instead, is it an exact substitute? I have a Linksys router. Thank you.

the main difference i noticed when shopping for the asus n53 dual band usb wireless adapter was the asus has a ralink chipset and the linksys ae2500 has a chipset made by wistron neweb for cisco. being a linux user i have always had better luck with driver support for ralink compared to broadcom, which would be the driver i would of had to use with the chipset made by wistron neweb- so i bought the asus n53 and use it with my laptop, i dont bang it around but i do toss it in the bag alot and its a very solid unit, great pick up strength-a purchase i am 100% satisfied with.
