i have a PCI Express half-length mini card socket...will this audio card fit on my computer?

Josh - I don't want to feed you any incorrect information by answering your question with a direct "yes" or "no".  Rather, what I think you should do is either look at your motherboard's manual (if you don't have the physical copy, look up your motherboard model on the manufacturers website and find a digital copy of the manual there), or go ahead and go to the manufacturers website anyway and locate your model of motherboard.

You're looking for any information that tells you that you have a PCI-E x1 slot on your motherboard.  If you have a PCI-E x16 slot (for graphics cards), you probably have a PCI-E x1 slot for these types of cards.  It is a very small port and typically sits right underneath the graphics card port.

You can also physically look at the motherboard, and typically the manufacturer will put an identifying mark around each port (example: the PCI-E x1 port will probably say "PCI-E x1" very close to the port itself - either right underneath it, above it, or to one of the sides).

Yes it will. As long as it is a pcie slot x1 or x16 you will not have a problem. I installed mine in. A pcie x16 slot.

Looks like just the slot type - this one is PCI-E while the other one is PCI. Notice the connectors that would go into the motherboard. Most motherboards have both these days, but you may want to research your motherboard before ordering, and make sure you will have room in your case for a PCI Express card since a lot of the time a PCI-E slot will be next to a graphics card. will this card work with windows 7 64 bit machines?

Works great with it. That is what I am running and my computer was having problems in games because of poor on board sound card (motherboard). Works smooth as silk now.

Can this thing do input and output through a single jack? My onboard sound can't and I need that for my razer krakens because of a wierd problem with the splitter.

NO, that's why you have a splitter. These devices have separate plugs for speaker output and mic input. Smartphones, however, have 4-pin plugs.

You need either XP, Vista, or Win 7, as your OS (32 and 64 bit both work; Window 8 isn't supported). You also need an open PCIe x1 slot (it works fine on both full-size and small-size PCIe slots). As long as your computer has reasonable specs (as in you're not running a Pentium 3) this is all that's required.

By slim I assume you mean the actual bracket on the back. It does come with a slim bracket for cases that don't offer full size brackets like video cards have.

Is anyone using this sound card with Windows 8.1 currently?  Want to know if this is compatible but want to hear from people who are actually using it, not just a guess.

I am currently using this sound card with Windows 8.1.  I watch video, including Netflix and various media file formats and Dolby Digital\DTS comes through perfectly using my Yamaha receiver.  You need to have the Asus Xonar Control Panel program installed to make it work properly though (at least I had to with my setup), as well as the proper codes of course.

Will this give enough to power a set of bookshelf speakers, or do I need to get a av receiver? If I need a receiver, can you recommend one that's not too expensive? Thanks!

True bookshelf speakers need amplification. Computer speakers usually have a volume control and have a small amp built into the speaker. So you would need an AV receiver to power the speakers using the analog outs. The digital connection also needs a receiver to convert the digital signal to analog to play out the speakers.
