Is this compatible with general ISP modems like what AT&T provides for fiber?

I can't speak to AT&T exactly, but I have mine plugged into one of the ports on back of the UBEE cable modem for Spectrum cable and it works just fine. Then the remote (satellite) node is using dedicated wireless backchannel and upstairs - works great. I would think if you had another computer, network switch, or even a separate wireless router (which I still do) in back of the AT&T cable modem and it worked, then this Asus system will work or you as well. I am very happy with the Asus ZenWIFI system. It was also easy to setup, just like they say it is.

Several reviews say that the guest network cannot be extended via the mesh because it's limited to the base unit and doesn't work from the satellite units. I need guest network all over the house. Has Asus fixed this?

Can you buy and add a single additional satellite to this system, or are you forced to buy in a 2-pack only?

I've yet to see the Zenwifi XT8s available in a single pack. I would think that one day it will happen. You could buy any of Asus' other mesh system routers available in a single pack and add them to your existing mesh system. Just be sure to get a tri-band router, so you could use the backhaul feature on the 2nd 5 Ghz band. You lose that feature with just a dual band.
