Can two land lines be connected to this phone and can the handset choose the line?

Yes and yes. There are two jacks on the base unit and the handset has a button for each line.

can you selectively turn the answering system off? e.g., can the ans system be ON for line 1 & OFF for line 2?

Yes the Answering machine can be turned off or on with a simple press of the button per line. You can also have separate recordings for the lines so if they are different individuals or companies you can set it up.
