Question 1

There's an 8 pin slot on my mother board right next to my cpu.  My power supply only has a 4 pin connector built into it, but I have two free molex connectors.  
From reading some comments about these, it seems most people use them to hook up video cards, but what if I plugged it into that slot? Would it explode or be awesome and work fine?

It won't work. They do have a molex to CPU cables. Search for 4pin to 8pin EPS power adapter cable. Or check Item# N82E16812200459

will this work with a 7950 ? doing a crossfire with another 7950 it lacks 1 pci express to psu

Yes, this will work on a 7950. I purchased this to crossfire my old 7950s.  Make sure you have enough power to run the 7950s in corssfire!

can i connect two separate fans to this one adapter?

It is not intended for that use. The purpose of this adapter is to power a graphics card if your power supply already does not have the correct connectors. Even if you wanted to try to use this for a different reason, the gender of the connectors is incorrect and therefore would not work for fans.

i just bought a firegl 8650 but it didnt come with the connectors.  is this the correct connector i need? it has a  six pin connection and an 8 pin for power

Yes, this works with pretty much any graphics card, but you should have gotten pci-e connectors with your power supply.  And in you are using this, make sure you have available molex plugs to get power for them.

Will this work with a 290X?

It has an 8pin and a 6 pin connector.
