Question 1

I have an old hp pentium 4. this S775 should replace the oem 410515-001 perfectly, without changing the backing plate, shouldn't it?

Actually this cpu cooler works perfectly if you have an existing backplate on your board. Most board have the backplate attached to the board and if you replace the heatsink it will not fall off unless the manufactuer has a bad design. The backplate is mounted to the back of the board so there would be no reason to remove it if you had to replace a bad heatsink. I build my pcs and never had it fall off. Also, this heatsink is good with the following CPU. Q9550 LGA775 which I am using it now for and it is cool with no increate in fan speed. Just make sure you screw the heatsink tightly otherwise you will have a shut down issue. I am also using this cooler on a E8600 3.33 GHZ and a Q9650  3.0GHZ. I have not problems thus far. Also this cooler is much quieter then the original HP cooler with not noticeable  fan increat like the old one. I hope this helps.

Question 2

Will this work with the Xeon x3220? The Xeon has a higher 105w TDP than the other socket 775 cpu's, just curious?

I have used this successfully with the Intel Q6700 CPU, which has a max TDP of 105W.  No problems with extended heavy gaming sessions, even when the CPU is pushed to its max capacity for a few hours straight.  Since the Xeon X3220 CPU has the same max TDP as the Q6700, I don't see a problem with this. Just make sure you have adequate case ventilation to help keep the cooler air flowing through freely, to expel any extra heat that is being radiated by the various heatsinks/components within the case.

I have a gateway GM5485E and my fan runs intermittantly would this fan fit this machine?

i have looked up the cpu socket type on the listed system it is a 775 socket and this product is for a 775 socket. this should work but i cant say 100% with out having seen the socket it self to check the clearance space. i have seen instance's where something on the board obstructs the heat sync. i would also make note they stopped making these type of sockets due to a design flaw on most of these over time the plastic that holds everything in place breaks and the screws are rendered useless making the heat sync hang and not make direct contact with the cpu failing to cool the cpu and ultimately resulting in cpu failure due to over heating.

I have a asus m4a79xtd evo MB with a AMD socket 941. I believe it is a quad core 955 ish processor. The cooling fan is AVC 12v .7a ASo2 ball bearing dvo7020b12v. It has 4 wires. One of the 6 fan blades broke off and I need to know what fan or Cpu cooler I can use to replace it. It has a release lever that mounts to a strap on the board and holds a tension strap against the cooling fins tight to the top of the chip. Will it work?

this heat sync is for the LGA 775 only this is designed for intel chips. when selecting a replacement heat sync you need to match the socket type to the board. i would also add that the design of this cooling system is flawed and it always fails at the screw down points. this cooling unit is obsolete and  was superseded by the LGA 1156. the socket you list having is also known as the am3 socket any cooling system listed to work with am3 sockets will suit your needs. i suggest something like the Cooler Master Hyper TX3

On this cooling fan it tells about 70mm, is that the distance between the mounting screws? or is it something I am not aware of?
