Question 1

I need to be sure that there is no install DVD/CD because most new Windows 8 laptops, including mine, have no DVD/CD drive. If it doesn't, I'll buy it. If it does, could you recommend another similar one specs/price that doesn't?

Go to the manufacturer's product page link from the Newegg item page and click on support and then downloads. Then download the zip file for the BTD-V401, unzip the file to your harddrive and install the software from there. I don't remember if I got an install disc, I just used the download.  I have only used this product with a windows xp laptop, but I doubt there would be any problem with windows 8 since the install download is supposed to be good for all recent varieties of windows. The aptx feature works good with an aptx compatible receiver. Much better sound.

I normally use it with win 7, but I tested it with my bluetooth headphones on win 8.1 and did not have any issues. I bought the device for my win 7 computer, though, so ymmv.

Does this Bluetooth adapter have a blinking light that shows connectivity?

Yes it has a fairly dim little LED on the side that would face you if you had it hooked up to your laptop on the left side . You can also see the led from the front. It blinks steadily when not hooked up to anything. When I turn on my headphones it starts blinking, or more like flickering sort of like a hard drive LED indicator

This appears to require the provided Bluetooth stack and does not work with Windows 8 without it.  It was not recognized by Windows but may work natively in OSX and Linux.

I have a bluetooth headset with a built microphone will this adapter allow the use of both the headset and the microphone?

Windows has a limitation as to the Bluetooth modes you can use. If you're using a headset (one ear piece), yes, you will hear from the earpiece and be able to use the mic simultaneously.

However, if you have bluetooth headphones, then you will have trouble trying to use the mic and a2dp headphone mode simultaneously. This is a limitation of the windows bluetooth stack. The adapter works fine.

Question 7

I need a USB/Bluetooth adapter that has Bluetooth Ver 2.1 with EDR.  I think this meets that requirement, but can you please confirm before I order?

Yes, this is higher, and has EDR. I use this with my bluetooth headphones (2.1 + EDR) regularly.

Question 8

Is this adapter compatibly with Mac OS X Mavericks? I have seen other sites writing reviews about this product saying that have been able to use it, but your site does not advertise that it is supported on Mac.

It should be compatible with OSX, given that Mac OS has a built-in Bluetooth stack (that, by my personal opinion, is much superior to the one provided by Microsoft with Windows).

Using it on a Mac should mean you don't have to download any additional software.
