Yes, for best cooling airflow should be directed towards the heatsink.  I tried a pull configuration with airflow directed away from heatsink and this actually increased CPU temps by a few degrees.

is it compatible with am3+ motherboards?

yes but, check your ram and io port and chipset spacing. some MB like to put a chipset close to the io ports. If you have ram with really tall heat spreading fins or same on chipset tall heat sink. They may be to tall and not allow for install, with out turning the fan over chipset and io ports. I placed mine in that direction of the io just so I can have easy access to install more ram or new sticks, because once this fan is installed, you more then likely not be able to access the ram slots closest to cpu, with out removing the fan. other those little things this fan works super well. it is super quite, and does hell of a job.

will this support mini atx motherboards?

Yes it has enough clearance for it. Though some boards will be smaller than others, and you may need to put Low Profile memory if the slots get covered by the heat sink. If you are using a smaller case along with it, where the fan may collide with cables, then i suggest also getting a fan grill to put on the fan.

In the picture, it looks like the Shadow Rock LP cooler traps the RAM sticks underneath it; is that right?  I.e., do you have to remove the cooler, breaking the thermal paste, to get to the RAM or the SATA plugs underneath it?

In most orientations this cooler will trap one or more DIMMs under it. You will have to remove the cooler to access your memory and you will have to replace the thermal paste upon reapplication of the heat-sink.

Most SATA configurations should be fine, considering the placement of SATA plugs on most motherboards is away from the CPU socket area.

is the fan replaceable?

The fans clips should work with most standard 120mm fans, so you should be able to replace the fan as long as you can get the clips off. Note, however that the fan clips secure very tightly to the heatsink; you may need a pliers to get them off after you install the first fan. I was able to install a different 120mm fan on mine, but never put the Pure Wings on so haven't tried to remove the clips.

Probably not. It is low profile compared to bulkier custom heatsink/fan assemblies, but it is not really suitable for 1U or SFF cases.
Do your homework and measure the vertical clearance first.

I still have my very first build. A Lan Party X38 Motherboard with 8 gigs of DDR2-800 ram and a 3.0 dual core. I know its old but it still works very well. My question is: Will this fit my cpu?

Yes, the be quiet! Shadow Rock LP CPU Air Cooler has a low-profile design with a maximum CPU cooler height of 75 mm, which should fit into a 2U server case.
