How do I know if this is compatible with my laptop?

If there is an expresscard slot on the side (or maybe back) of your laptop then you are good to go.  I think the newer laptops no longer have them, but mine is a 2011 lenovo so it still had the slot.  You don't have to worry if the slot is too wide (mine was), you simply push the expresscard in keeping it flush with the left side and it will slide and lock into place securely (there are two different size express cards out there, and this adapter is the narrower one).  
The expresscard slot is perhaps 2 - 3" wide and only a few centimeters high.  It's a good bit larger than an SD card slot.  So, if you have a fairly wide but slim slot on the side or back of your laptop (usually covered with a little door on a hinge that you can just push open easily) then you likely can use this expresscard.  Let's just say if you have a slot wide enough for a credit card to slip into (that's not a CD/DVD drive), then you're probably good to go.

windows 7 compatible?

According to the information below by the manufacturer it works with Windows Vista. I would expect it to also work with Windows 7 sine Vista and 7 are built on the same platform. Hope that helps.

Will this card fit in a ExpressCard/54 card slot on a Gateway P-6860FX?

This card works in my laptop with a "Universal" or standard laptop  ExpressCard/54 slot.  I can't speak to the Gateway model you cited.  The included CD had drivers for Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

an old computer will usually have PCMCIA and not express card, even if software drivers are available for xp/2000.
