ASUS doesn't care Haswell system at Meltdown Spectre crisis 4/5/2018 9:25:05 PM

Pros: - Good performance for the price. Good cooling at the first year.

Cons: - Some G750 have Thunderbolt, some don't. This product doesn't have Thunderbolt support.
- CPU hit 100 degree C at 2017 to lose system power when I played Diablo III. I had to disassemble the laptop and apply thermal paste on CPU.
- ASUS doesn't care Haswell system at Meltdown Spectre crisis. There is no plan to fix security vulnerability for this laptop. If any security exploit comes, this laptop will be useless.

Overall Review: - Do you know that Dell and HP provided all BIOS updates for Haswell systems even at January? They've already updated several times whenever Intel updated fix. What are you doing, ASUS?

Stay away from ASUS laptops (especially RoG) 7/18/2017 8:00:58 AM

Pros: Good specs for a laptop to play games on.

Cons: The laptop was working fine and then it would drop the wifi connection all the time and it would have to be reset for it to work again. After 2.5 years of owning this, it stopped working completely and is a hardware failure. It will no longer boot at all and the power on button does nothing. I never even put a lot of stress on this laptop gaming wise and it sat on the same desk for the entire time I had it.

Overall Review: Do not waste $1300+ on buying ASUS products without an extended warranty of some sort. I have never had to buy a warranty for a product ever before and this is the only laptop/computer I've ever owned that failed so quickly. Customer Service is a complete joke after the first year. They don't care about their customers at all.

Prime example of "You get what you pay for" 5/19/2017 4:16:46 PM

Pros: solid CPU
adequate GPU
great cooling
Nice Keyboard and track pad.
crisp display.
Speaker system sounds great for a laptop.

Cons: Gaming laptop with ONLY a 5400rpm drive (see other comments)
Optimus technology not....optimal
Bloatware

Overall Review: First, I'd like to address the people who are putting down this product for not being a "gaming" laptop. it is, you're dumb. It cost 1200 bucks. you get what you are paying for. that said....

The laptop has some interesting quirks, and generally requires a moderate level of knowledge to make it sing. As others have stated, windows 8 blows, but if you upgrade to 8.1(free) and buy a lifetime start8 license for $5 it's a non-issue. As for performance in games, it is obvious to me that many of these users trashing it's abilities are running on the intel graphics. Certain games will not cause the laptop to switch GPUs over to the dedicated card. This is an issue with optimus technology, not the hardware itself, go blame NVidia. However, if you simply enter the NVidia Control Panel and set the 860m as the primary card while gaming, it will disable the intel graphics, problem solved. Done gaming? switch back, easy. Also, if trying to game on the battery, the 860m is flat out disabled if optimus technology is turned on. plugging the laptop in does not properly switch over and sometimes requires a restart of the game or PC. Finally, keeping drivers up to date is paramount to proper GPU performance on this machine, an out of date driver will destroy your FPS. All this said, the 860m does a great job gaming on most titles at medium-high settings at 60+ fps. Even World of Warcraft, which is horribly optimized runs smooth as silk at the "7" preset with FXAA high turned on. The GPU boosts up to just under 1200mhz which is pretty friggin' impressive considering many of AMDs current RX series barely break that out of the box 3 years later. To compare it to a desktop, this laptop performs roughly as well as an overclocked i7-920 paired with a 660Ti. Pretty good.

Now for the things that bug me. First off, the hard drive. Not only is a 5400RPM OS drive ridiculous for a gaming PC, it is a downgrade from the previous generation which came with a 750gb 7200rpm drive (my brother owns the previous gen). AS others have stated, this drive causes the PC to take an eternity to boot. It's smooth once it gets to desktop, but sometimes can take 3+ minutes to get there. Additionally, there isn't an option to install windows on the drive of your choice, so adding an SSD will require you to either make a ghost, which is a p.i.t.a, or completely remove the ASUS recovery software. I personally ended up just wiping it clean since I had a windows 8 install disc laying around (your windows license is linked to the hardware so no activation key is necessary if you are simply reinstalling windows 8 or 8.1. I would've also liked to have gotten 16gb of RAM as that was standard in my eyes for a gaming PC, but I understand that the price drop had to come from somewhere, and 12gb is still plenty. The laptop does come with a bit of annoying bloatware, but that's par for the course in a pre-built system.

All in all this machine does whatever I need it to do. handles any schoolwork I need to do as well as allows me a pleasurable gaming experience if I'm away from home for work. That is what this is meant for in my opinion. If you want to have a gaming PC for your home, build a desktop, laptop gaming is more expensive for less performance. I've owned this machine for roughly 3 years now and I expect it to easily make it for another 2 years until I finish with college.

I realize this review is way late, but I figured I'd post one anyway to combat the reviews done by users who trash hardware that they don't know how to use and/or expect the world from a budget device. These will begin to emerge on the used market soon and I would recommend them as a good buy at around the $450-$500 mark.

Bricked on me randomly after 3 years 5/10/2017 7:27:14 PM

Pros: Was awesome. Excellent performance and stability. No problems at all until...

Cons: 3 years out it totally bricked. It won't turn on. Indicator lights flash but screen and HDD won't do anything. Hopefully ASUS can fix it...

Great while it lasted 2/24/2017 11:59:02 AM

Pros: Fast. Quick to boot. Worked great and ran smooth. Quiet

Cons: Windows 8
A fan port on the motherboard burned out in less than 3 years so it keeps overheating. Have to replace whole motherboard to repair +$600.

Overall Review: Having this thing burn out so quickly has me browsing other places to buy laptops...like Dell XPS or Alienware. Maybe even going to look at MSI. I was a die hard Asus guy for many years. Seems they're products are slipping...
