will this work on windows 7?  the plantronics one did not work, dead on arrival..so will this one work out of the box?

Yes, I have been using them for months now on win7 64bit. I took them out of the box and plugged them in and they instantly worked. You will hear an audible beep noise when they connect to your PC. You can then jump over to logitech's website and grab the latest drivers for it and you should be set. The sound it very nice and the mic is as clear as day. Ive used it for gaming with Ventrilo, TeamSpeak and Skype and all worked flawlessly. I've also used it for phone calls via google voice or face to face and they work great, Whom ever I talked to said I came in very clear. When gaming I can get about 10 hours straight before they start beeping on me, letting me know to recharge. I've also noticed that after the recharge beeping starts, I can still go about 30min before they stop working. For casual use, you can turn them off and on when you need them all day and not need to recharge them. Im currently playing Skyrim while I wait for Elder Scrolls Online to be released on April 4th. I'll play 3-4 hours in the morning and turn them off, then a few hours around lunch time and a little more after dinner and they never needed recharging. I just plug them in at the end of the day like a cell phone and they are ready to help me take on the day in the morning. I hope this helps you and sorry for the lengthy review. Where can I purchase replacement foam earphone covers?  I have worn one of mine out.

Just hope over to logitech's website and shoot them an email, informing them about your situation. Be sure to include the model and serial number. They should be able to send some replacement foam ear covers. I had a charging issue with the first one I bought, so I contacted them and about a week later I had a replacement headset and have not had an issue since.
