Is this a unique type of controller, such as one made specifically for use with a PC, or is it just a regular XBox controller bundled with a USB receiver?

its and xbox 360 controller with a wireless receiver and an install cd for windows. i bought it to play batman arkham origins and it works for skyrim and pretty much any other game that has been released for both xbox and pc. to be honest xbox is is the same as windows pc with graphic limitations

yes i use mine with pc u need http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1PU0K69381 to go with it very easy to set up . most games will work with it others you may need to use the 360 controller emulator , works with alot of games on steam , bf4 , ect..

Yes. I am currently using it with 8.1. it is natively supported so you wont even need to install drivers.

Does it work on win 8 or 7?

It should work on both.  I can at least confirm it working on windows 7 with the drivers available from MS.  I'm pretty sure such drivers aren't needed on windows 8.

does it work with all steam games or only ones that say u can use the controoler with?

It depends on if said game supports the use of a gamepad/controller you would have to look up if the game you want has support for one. However this controller works just like it should as is you were playing it on the console.

Does this device work with a ASUS Laptop using Windows 8?

Yes, it works with my Windows 7 machine (HP) and my windows 8.1 machine (MSI) and worked on the msi before I upgraded to 8.1. I don't think the brand matters just that it works with windows 8. I think it's a great controller, I was using a ps3 controller with a emulator and it was flakey and I got the 360 controller and that controller is so heavier and nicer and more comfortable than a ps3 controller and its not flakey at all it works mint.
