Hello! I'm considering this headset and was wondering how the firmware support is. Anyone have any problems with a lack of updates, etc?

I've had this headset since December I installed the firmware once I got it. It's never had an update as far as I know and I've never had a single problem with the firmware to date and I use it everyday.

Are they plug and play. Or software download?

If you are using the 3.5mm jack input then yes they are plug and play for everything you are using it with.

If you are using the 7.1 USB connector then you will want to go to the Plantronics site support section for the RIG 500E to download the Dolby Adapter drivers but on my testing on Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 it will download an older Plantronics driver to allow you to use the 7.1 Surround Sound Features through the USB connector without any issues. Just be aware though the software download from their site though does allow you to customize the 7.1 Surround Sound features and some of the sound settings with an equalizer if you want to fine tune the sound a bit more which I find if you know what your doing can be worth it.
