Can you detach the mixing board from the headphones?

No, the cord that goes from the computer tor the mixer is not detachable. Also, likewise for the cord from the mixer to the headphones.

How durable is this headset, I really like Roccat and I had the original Kave 5.1, but it's broken now. This looks really good and I have a 5.1 sound card in my system and this one looks way more durable. I loved the sound quality and comfort on the original kave, so will this one break too?

Have had mine for about 2 months so far and have fallen asleep with them on and otherwise been a bit rough with them, doing absolutely great so far, not even any signs of wear.

The cups can wiggle back and forth (on purpose) which i personally didn't like since i like very solid headphones but it's only even noticeable when you wiggle them in your hands. I feel like the more something is allowed to wiggle the sooner it will come loose or break, but these phones dont feel like they're going to get junky on me any time soon.

The sound is really only prime for gaming, movies, etc. I made the mistake of thinking they might double as good audio production headphones. That was my own fault and i've since bought studio headphones as well to switch back and forth with.

The volume control pod is very useful. Cool lights, easy bypass when needed, and it's handy to be able hook up external speakers as well as an entire surround system if you have one.

Biggest true complaint with these is a noticeably quiet maximum sound output. I've found plenty of times that turning my pc'ssystem volume up to max, coupled with turning whatever media source all the way up, and then turning the Roccat volume all the way up, and I'm still not getting the sound output i prefer for certain gaming or youtube/etc situations. If you need genuinely loud phones, do some serious looking into these before buying because there might be a more optimum headset for you.

But yes, very sturdy, though a bit (purposefully) wiggly, without sacrificing an overall feel of trustworthiness in the integrity of these headphones.

I bought the Roccat Kone mouse after these to pair them together, and havent even had time to really tweak the settings of either with the Roccat user interfaces. I can't wait to get these products running in their "final form"

Question 3

How exactly does the built-in sound card funtion? Is it multiple audio output jacks for separate devices or just jacks for a Surround Sound setup? Like could I switch between this headset, a single jack speaker, a pair of earbuds, and studio headphones if I plug each one into a separate jack? Or do I have to set up speakers around the room and plug them in accordingly to specific jacks based on their position?

The software provides the option to listen either in stereo or surround.  For the 3.5mm jacks on the from of the controller, they correspond to each of the channels in 1 5.1 system, so you could plug in all the different items in, but you would only hear those channels in whatever was plugged in.  They are very easy to switch in and out though, through the plugs.

I have a fairly large head. has anybody else with a big head tried using this and if so, some response please?

I too have a large head and large ears as well and this headset is fantastic! It is flexible (no break), and as you probably already know this device has its own sound card. Truly these are 5.1 in its sound (as well as stereo of course) individual settings are at your disposal. However, I did fail to mention earlier about the ear cups themselves; they are large enough for all of my elephant ears to nicely flop inside of the cup itself. The only point of this headset I don't like is the music. They are for gaming, not music. Friend I hope this answer helps you in your decision to purchase, but make no mistake if your buying for gaming you will not find a better headset period.

My desktop speakers are quadraphonic.  Does the software allow for quadraphonic sound, or is it just 5.1?

5.1, or stereo only. Also the sound does not sound as though there are speakers directly on the left and right of you. It's trying to simulate & make up for the gap. 5.1 is normally 4 speakers in 4 corners, the center and the subwoofer. That audio quality was a big change from my old stereo ones. Took a little while getting used to. One thing to note though is that if you put your computer to sleep, the lights on the headset will always remain on. Also the movie mode button doesn't seem to do anything at all. For best audio select "Mix Stereo to 5.1 Channels", deactivate everything under Advanced Control and under Equalizer simply select WoW. This will give you what I believe is the best audio quality for gaming and won't leave you feeling like your inside a fish bowl.

These look like they're only USB, will I be able to use these with my sound card (It's 5.1) with these headphones?

Do you know if this headset is compatible with all Bluetooth devices or only smartphones?

I believe it will pair with any phone that will pair with any blue tooth headset.  I could not get it to be recognized via bluetooth on my tablet, although my tablet is not connected to any phone networks.

Can anybody recommend a good set of speakers to go with this?

With the 5.1 output, easy switching between the two it will depend on what you want them to do . But I use the headset for gaming and Bose Companion 5 for everything  else I don't watch movies on my computer so 2.1 is fine

I see in some reviews that the best way to maximize your experience with this headset is to download a different codecs. If that is the case what is the best codec to try?

I had used the K-Lite mega codec pack, and Advanced codec pack. It seemed to help a bit.  But after having owned them for about 7 months now, I'm not so sure codecs are really necessary.  It's more about adjusting the Roccat control panel for the different activities you do, and your preferences, than codec installation.
