Yes, the Roku1 has composite video output (yellow video cable with red and white stereo output) so it should work with older TVs that have such inputs. I am currently using it on an older tube style TV (4:3 format). If you eventually upgrade TVs then you can switch to the HDMI output.

does this unit have usb access and what type files will it play?

The Roku 1 DOES NOT have a USB and can only play MKV, MP4, MOV and MWV files from a network device such as a media player not connected by USB. And ONLY files that have 2 channel stereo, it cannot play surround sound. It will only pass sound through the HDMI to your device to decode. If your device does not decode 5.1 then no sound. (like my TV).

Does Roku charge a subscription fee or is this a one time purchase price expense?
I understand that Netflix, Hulu...etc. require subscription fees for certain services.  Does Roku charge anything like that?

The Roku is the hadware that Hulu, Netfix, Youtube and Pandora programs run on.  You will still have to pay for any subscriptions.  I bought it because it had RCA jacks so I didn't have to upgrade the kids TV for them to get the Disney channels we stream on the Roku for them.

Will this roku work with old analog tv?

It has the yellow/red/white connector which is common on an old analog TV like mine. But if you only have a coaxial (cable jack), you can purchase a RF modulator which allows you to connect the colored cables to the coaxial jack on your TV. Newegg sells a RCA RF Modulator for ~16.99 at the time of this response.

The Roku 1 works but is very slow compared to some other Roku models. Netflix only uses the old client and there is a large delay in loading apps. If you are getting it for occasional use only, this device is fine.

Question 7

The Roku 1 does not have dual band wireless as do the other models.  What does that mean?

I have dual band router and my Roku works fine.  The dual band gives less chance of interference from other routers in your neighborhood.  So unless you have more than 3 or 4 other wireless networks you are picking up, you should be fine.

The Manual Install Method:

Go to roku's owner website and sign into your account
After logging in, click on the link ‘Add a Private Channel’
In the textbox, type in TwitchTV
Click the ‘Add Channel’ button
On the confirmation screen, click the ‘Yes, Add Channel’ button

Yes, I know the CW app is free and I am using that right now. The ABC app is available and I am not sure if it's a paid service. But it's available. If your eliminating cable I would look into tablo tuner to go with this as well. I have a roku on three tv's in my home and have completely eliminated cable. Been this way for three years now.
