Any idea if the shielding is foil or a braid?

All the descriptions I've seen say the cable is shielded with some type of screen which leads me to believe it is what you call braided. If you want to know about performance I use them in that building built in 1936 and have had great luck with them shielding EMF in the old building. Good luck I hope this helps.

Is this cable suitable for PoE?  Has anyone tried it?

Should be more than sufficient - this is a high-quality CAT-7 with STP. I used to connect between server farms in the same building with no quality issues. Well within the PoE requirements.

What is the wire gauge (AWG) for this cable?

im not sure on the gauge but I've had no problems with any signal loss
