How do i used this for a single monitor ?

I haven't tried myself, but I believe you can slide the VESA bracket along the entire length of the support bar. There is nothing that would obstruct it from being in the middle.

how does the screen attach?  Do I need to buy new computer screens?  My current screens are hold HP Compaq and are on stands and I cant tell if the stand is removable

The screens will attach using standard VESA mount holes on the back of your monitors. If your monitor does not have these holes then you will need to buy some sort of adapter that will mount to you monitors and allow you to then mount them to the stand. I have older Dell monitors that do not have VESA mount holes and are on bases. My bases were removable and I was able to find adapters that worked with my model of monitor. I mounted the adapters to the monitors in place of the bases and then was able to mount them to the stand. Hope this help.
