Do you need to use the usb sound card or can i plug the microphone and headphone connections into my sound card on my desktop?

You can use either the USB card or plug directly into your sound card. That was the nice thing about these particular headphones. I purchased a SB card and I wanted to use the 2x3.5 audio jacks it was difficult to find a good price with the connections. The plus side about this is that if your sound card goes out you have the USB to fall back on.

looking at this for my son and wanted to know if I need anything else so he can use it with an xbox one?

I don't know if xbox one has compatible usb drivers for the surround card but it can be used as standard headphones with mic and earphone jack
