Is it backwards compatible with PS1 also?

Oh the glorious CECHA01! Best PS3 by far, CECHA01 was the launch model, included a hardware PS2 onboard. The Graphics engine, RAM, and CPU from the PS2 are all soldered onto the board, so for backwards compatibility this one is your best bet if you don't want to keep a physical PS2.

Many of the YLOD problems are due to the lead free solder that debuted on the PS3. Lead free has a much lower tolerance for heating/cooling cycles, and that chip gets HOT.

Blow it out frequently, put it on a 2” stand to give it more space for the intake on the bottom, keep 12-18” open behind it. Heat will kill it, but all 8 of the dead launch units I reflowed for friends/family back in 2008 are still running, all CECHA01 models. Not statistically valid sample for sure, but you might as well maximize your chances by keeping it cool.

does this game console play playstation 1 playstation 2 and playstation 3 games?

Yes CECHA01 will play all three.  PS1, PS2 and PS3.  PS2 playback is via hardware and not software emulation like the 80GB models, which is a good thing.  All versions of PS3 play PS1 games.

I recommend picking up the laptop sized Samsung 1 TB Spinpoint M8 HDD.  I changed our the 60GB HDD with the 1 TB Samsung HDD.  It gives plenty of storage for game data from discs that need supplementaldata from PAN as well as for digital purchases off of PSN.

Lastly, since it is a refurb, Make sure to verify that the unit completely functions.  My first one had broken PS2 functionality and I had to RMA to Newegg to get one that completely worked.

Yes it will. It is completely backwards compatible for ps1 and ps2 and plays all ps3 games. It was totally worth it. I have played all kinds of ps1 and ps2 games on it and it runs flawlessly. Definitely suggest this if you are a retro gamer at all or if you just like popping in older disc for nostalgia.

Like others have said, it is plug-and-play... except for the controllers - you use the DS3 wireless controllers, which is FANTASTIC! The only adapters necessary would be the memory card adapter, BUT ONLY IF you have an old PS2/PSX memory card from which you want to import data. And some specialized controllers (Guitar Hero, EyeToy) may have issues. In the latter case, I would recommend just re-purchasing the PS3 version - It should be fairly cheap to find them used now. Has the refurbishment been good? Will this thing last long? I heard about bluray problems and YLOD.

My son and I each bought one of these models at the same time.

YLOD happens because of excessive heat generated by the RSX graphics processor and they generate a LOT of it!  With that in mind, we took my son's PS3 apart to make modifications to the case to improve air flow.  Doing that requires you to replace the thermal paste (you cannot reuse thermal paste; dis-assembly requires removal/cleaning of old paste and applying new paste).  It did look like the refurbishing included new thermal paste but as I said, we ended up replacing it anyway.

From the disassembly, we saw he had the "better" 19-blade fan; even though we haven't opened up my PS3 yet, we can see it has the 15-blade fan.

Since these are refurbed units, they probably all suffered the YLOD or RLOD at some point causing them to be returned to Sony under warranty.  I have no idea what Sony did (officially) to refurb them but as others have said, mine is currently working well; time will tell.  All I can suggest is you Google "PS3 fat 60GB cooling mods" and consider making some mods to your case to improve airflow and thereby improve cooling.

is this console ntsc-usa or ntsc-japan? i have got many japanese editon games for ps2. so i am not sure my games can works well on this console or not if it is a ntsc-usa one?

This console is NTSC-USA. However, because it is one of the original systems with the full backward compatibility it is supposed to be able to play all PS1 and PS2 games from any region. I can't confirm that, as I haven't tried it. But if there is any PS3 system that could do that, this is the one.

In the meantime, there is a bunch of info on this if you Google "japanese games playable on NTSC PS3".

Can this device play SACD discs? I know that model CECHA was originally able to, but I understand a firmware upgrade removed this feature. (Classical music labels are still recording SACDs.)
