If you connect this system to the internet and allow it to update, will it remove the backwards compatibility?

No, it won't. The backward compatibility is because the machine itself has some hardware that the newer versions don't have. When ps2 games were compiled, they were compiled for a specific hardware architecture. PS3 games are compiled for the ps3 hardware architecture. They took the hardware out of newer versions because ps2 was still a great system and they didn't want it to just die.

Question 2

I bought this for the backwards compatibility. I wanted to transfer all my data from my newer PS3 unit but the hard drive in this one is smaller than that one and it won't let me do that. Can I merely swap the hard drives between the two? Will this negate the backwards compatibility? Going by the answers to Jennifer K.'s question I am thinking it won't but I want to be sure. Thank you for your help.

You can swap the drive out with a bigger one.  But if you have playstation plus, you can save most of your stuff online.  Make sue if you swap out drive to have all your game saves on a sd or fd.
also make sure the newest operating system update is on that fd or sd.  on the look up file structure on playstation website and it will show you how to save it.  Swapping drives is easy, internet has instructions for that.  good luck

I'd like to find out if these units' system software is pre v3.21 update, 4/1/2010?  We are a non-profit research facility and would like to explore building a PS3 cluster.  Units with the v3.21 update and later are not able to run Yellow Dog Linux.  We also would need a quantity of 8 if they are viable.
