the specification says one female and 2 male connectors and the picture and description says two females and one male connector. What is correct?

The picture is correct -- I think you have misunderstood what "female" and "male" mean here.

The two connectors on the left in the image are male. They have exposed connectors protruding out of them. (They also have a plastic sleeve around them, to guide them in, but so do male VGA connectors.)

The picture is what you get. That is actually 2xM, 1xF despite the possible confusion -- go with what the picture shows, and in the future, keep in mind that maybe it's easy to mix up male/female on these connectors. Google "male fan power" and you'll see plenty of male connectors -- some of which are bare, some of which will have this nice plastic sleeve to hold the two together.

Question 2

Can I plug this directly into one header on the motherboard and add 2 fans without seriously screwing anything up?

Yes, I needed two fans slots because of my push pull configuration on my heatsinc. This worked, the fans still operate at their max rpms. Question 3

If I connect this splitter to a Motherboards 4 pin PWM connector and connect 2, 3 Pin Chassis fans to the Adaptor will the connected 3 Pin fans speed be controlled by the speed signal coming off the 4 Pin Motherboard connector ???

Hi Daniel. Sorry, just noticed these questions from Newegg. Sorry, if you take a splitter off of the motherboard PWM block, it MUST connect to a four pin fan! Three pin fans only have negative, positive (12v) and I believe a TAC (RPM) wire that reads a signal into the motherboard. The fourth wire sends a signal that pulses to the fan into either slow or fast revs. Hope this helps... Cheers, Glenn

does one end of the "y" need to have tach wire cut to avoid sending multiple signals to mobo?

I didn't when I used it on 2 different motherboards, as the BIOS fan controls picked up the correct RPM each time, on 2 of the same fans of course. 1 which has been running for almost a yr. now (Asus) and a MSI
