Does it just duplicate the screen or does it allow you to have to different work screens?

It depends on how you set it up using your operating system. You can set it up in settings according to your preferences.

Does this work for extending displays or for mirror only?

I actually ended up returning this item since it couldn't handle the dual monitors I purchased. I will say that the company I purchased it from was very forgiving.
