Pros: Supermicro quality is good, description is accurate.
Cons:
You CAN use this with a non-Supermicro motherboard however you will need a motherboard header adapter. Supermicro makes the part it is: CBL-0084L
The cable used a 3-Pin power connecter however you can unpin it and move the pin to work on the standard 2 pin motherboard power connector.
Overall Review: Makes any build look professional and has hot-swap bays. Perfect for small form factor NVR using the new 1151 Chips.
Pros:
+ Looks Good! (and tiny)
+ Removable Motherboard Tray
+ Sturdy Sleds (once drives are installed with 4-6 screws)
+ Easy drive install/removal with seemingly good connection to backplane
+ 2x internal 2.5" drive locations
+ slim optical drive option (uses one of the 2.5" drive spaces)
+ Feels well constructed, most edges of steel are rolled and thick gauge
+ Decently Quiet Fan
+ Space for Half-Height PCIE card
+ PSU is surprisingly quiet and seems to work well.
+ Front of door is rigid metal mesh w/ plastic frame and holds closed with a magnet
Cons:
- Front USB is 2.0
- Proprietary Ribbon Cable for power/reset (you WILL need part CBL-0084L for any non-Supermicro Motherboards)
- That ribbon cable is also ridiculously long, even without adding the additional 6" break-out cable to it
- Mesh door can NOT be easily removed for cleaning, dust must be blown/vacuumed out.
- As expected, cable management will be almost non-existent. Though there is space between the PSU and front of the case that you can tuck most excess cables.
Overall Review: This is perfect for a NAS, but also works for a usable system. I would like to see an updated option for USB 3.0 front ports and maybe one with an SD card reader. I consider the case a value because it is a small footprint, and comes with a built in drive cage that would cost you $100 or so by itself. Once loaded up with 4x 6TB drives, it's amazing how much this tiny case weighs.
Pros: compact. 4 front removable drives.
Cons:
silly money grubbing:
drive trays included are 3.5" only, with a silly plastic spacer attache with screws to each and every drive tray.
2.5" drive trays are avaiable but cost 30$ EACH, raising the price to 300$ if you want to use 2.5.
the 2.5 drive trays seem to be identical to the included drive trays, meaning they could have just put those in isntead of the stupid plastic spacers and greatly increased the value of the product.
Pros:
- I put a CSE-PTJBOD-CB2 in here to make it into a 4 disk external SAS JBOD. Works perfectly for my use case.
- High quality backplane with SES-2, make sure you get a supermicro sas cable with sideband to take advantage of it.
- High quality build and drive trays.
Cons: - Even though I'm not using the USB ports, SuperMicro really needs to upgrade them to USB 3.0. I wouldn't be happy with the USB 2.0 ports if I had a real motherboard inside this chassis.
Overall Review: - The case would be amazing if the low profile bracket was somehow changed to normal size. This would be perfect for a home media center computer with 4 disks and a GPU in the PCI bracket.
Pros:
very quiet
compact size
hot swap drive bays
Cons:
if using a non-supermicro mini-itx addition cable (not included) is needed for the front panel connector to the mb. All you need is to order front control cable 16pin split (Part number CBL-0084L)
once i had the cable and figured out my MB pinouts everything is up and running fine.
Overall Review:
the documentation should state clearly this case is designed for supermicro only but you can use others with the addional cable...
from SM support...
"Thank you for contacting Supermicro tech support.
Theoretically any Mini ITX motherboard should work with SC721TQ-250B. Since our chassis is designed around our motherboards, we cannot guarantee or recommend.'
This the same answer I received from others on newegg aswell
Pros: Good case for a small server. Identical to iXsystems FreeNAS Mini Case.
Cons:
Not manual included.
Front USB ports are USB 2.0
Pros:
- Sturdy, Quiet and well finished product
- Good access openings
- Bronze power supply included
Cons: None really, it is a great case.
Overall Review: Great case with a small foot print and its nice to look at! Runs "cool" with four WD Black drives.

Overall Review: This was excellent for my needs. You need to read carefully the specs before jumping to buy it though. It needs a proprietary front panel cable, for reset, power on, etc. It has a good fan, not very noisy and powerful enough. You can slide the motherboard tray to easily access ports/jumpers/etc. The case is generally good quality, good cuts and overall good materials. The HDD trays are well built without the problems other manufactures have. This goes back to reading the spec. This case is small, so please check carefully what clearance you have before buying. I did my homework and I knew all of these before buying it, including what heatsink the CPU will have, how big it it will be, etc.
