Does this come with the stylus?

Yes, and screen protectors.  It is attached with the coiled wire. Make sure you order the correct version for the software you will be working with.

Is it compatible with windows 8?

Not tested on Windows 8 - Win 7 => OK. Beside that the supplied software is only for developers - looks like it all uses pretty old Win APIs. I returned my Topaz, because it simply would not transfer signature into any application commonly used in our environment. We ended up using Wacom Bamboo and/or Android tablets where apply - which is easy to adjust for any application. 
  In addition - this unint looks like that it has display - but the it has not. 
  This Topaz T-S460... is good if plan to incorporate it as a part of your own software/hardware product and you are really good programmer.

How long is the USB cable?

It's about 5 feet long, it is comfortable to take customer signatures over the desk.

I believe this is the same model that I purchased and yes the USB cord is attached to the unit.

Question 5

Does this product require special software?  Or, is it more generic, looking like a "mouse" to the computer (i.e. treating the signing of a signature as moving the mouse whilst the left button is pressed)?

I am interested in using a service called "HelloSign", which allows you to sign email attachments through a web browser.  If this device requires special software or only works with certain programs then I will not be able to use this product. :(

Hi Michael
This product does not require special software to install or to run, kind of plug and play equipment.  
We use it to sign scanned pdf documents.  Documents are opened up through a system which able to capture signature. The only preparation before capturing signature, is to use "Paint" from "Accessories" to locate the signature area from the pdf file.  
As long as your program has ability to capture the signature, it should be no problem on using this signature pad.  However, I am not sure the limitation on this signature pad, if it is only works with certain programs.

can you see your signature on the pad when you sign?

No. There are upgraded units from Topaz, but they're much more expensive.  With this unit, the signature can be seen on the monitor, but not on the pad.  The signer gets used to it pretty quickly.

Yes.  Drake recommended this exact on at the Update Class in the fall of 2013.

I bought these a while ago so I don't remember if they came with a disc or not.  I upgraded my entire system to W8 and know for a fact that every driver you might need can be downloaded from their website

As a standard USB device, I would expect it to be, but since it lacks the visual feedback, I would not recommend this device to anyone.

you cannot see on the device what you're writing, so it rendered the device almost useless. I found it nearly impossible to "write" on something where you cannot see what you're writing, and signatures looked nothing like the real thing.  Even watching what I was doing on a computer screen did not help.  It was a big disappointment.  It did what it was designed to do, but did not do the job.

It does not matter if it is compatible or not.   If you want a signature pad, get one that has the visual feedback, even though they cost three or four times as much.
