Does this have a mute button for the mic?

Yes. This headset do indeed have a mute button for the mic. It's on the right side and towards the front. It's called "mic on" and "mic off". It also have a volume button so that you can hear the loudness of your own voice. I hope that this is helpful.

Does this headset have an analogue volume dial - the kind that sooner or later ends up making a scratchy noise every time you move it and sometimes causing one side to go out until you re-position it?

It does but I have used mine for over two years and its still good and not showing signs of wearing out. I know what you are referring to and have had the same issue on lower quality headsets.

Yes, the headset can be worn and used while attached to the computer via USB.  It will charge while you are using them.

Looking to buy this in addition for the steam link to enjoy my computer in another room primarily the front room. How is 20 foot 1 wall distance quality. I have a turtle beach pla headset i bought for 80 the year before its excellent but its wired and its time to free my neck :) would this be about the same or better quality if we put aside the fact its wireless for a minute?

I find it reaches the entire upper floor of my apartment, even though my computer is in the far corner. I'd estimate the range at at least 30-40 feet horizontally and a couple walls.

It doesn't seem to carry well through the floor, however; it starts to cut out when I go downstairs, even though it's closer to the transmitter. Unlike other wireless headphones I've had, it doesn't disconnect completely when it starts to get out of range, you just hear some crackles/pops as the signal quality degrades, so it's fine for intermittent trips to the refrigerator, etc.

Does anyone know what the decibel rating is on the headphones? That is the true defining factor for bass. With that said, how well does this perform both on the low and high end? If a low level bass comes through, does it cut out the high end?

I would say the base is decent and the highs are pretty good. The overall sound quality for gaming is very good. You can pick up the movements of players near you very easily. As for the durability it is very good and the range is about 30 to 35 feet through walls. I am very pleased with this headset but listening to music is not a priority for me. If that's important to you I would look to spend a little more money. Although from my research these are a great bang for the buck.

can you use it for xbox one?

I do not believe it's XBOX compatible, a tip for Turtle Beach headsets is usually they are color coded for use: red for PC, blue for PlayStation and green for Xbox.

It looks like its using the standard mesh material that some Turtle Beach units would use, and could confirm that those units are fairly comfortable. However, we cannot confirm as to the foam padding or if its memory foam. You may check youtube video reviews for information regarding comfort levels of this headset.

Does mic monitoring work during Bluetooth calls? And does this require an external device?

I have never used it in that way, when connected to a computer it links to a separate USB connected device. There is a cord that goes from the headset to a 3.5 audio jack, I am not sure if it work as both input and output for sound and voice.
Also not very comfortable after several hours of use, I've had for over a year and still have not broken in for comfort.
