Hi, I just came from a website that I've been searching for days to find this info for my problem, I need the same cable but for a 9 pin plug, please advise me if you have it?  Thanks

Hello Carol!
I got this cable for my aviation Garmin GPS. The GPS is an older unit that still needs the DB9 connection for downloading the aviation updates. Since I also needed the USB to connect to the computer and facilitate this I found this cable at CTG. It works just fine and I was able to successfully download the data so there is no problem in using it for that purpose. If your needs are similar I recommend this cable.

Does this cable allow for assigment of com1-com3 or does it start higher?

Hi Greg, I've found no problem in using these COM ports. Though, I believe COM1 is reserved for the RS232 DB9 connector on the PC/docking station, but everything above COM1 (I think) should work, and I think is a functional of what the PC says is available, and not the USB/Serial adapter. I had a problem were I was losing available ports to connect to & found this link,

(I just found I can't add a link for you in this message. Do a Google search on "Clearing unused COM ports on PC")

to clear supposedly "ports in use", when there is nothing connected to it. You may have ports COM2 & 3 incorrectly showing in use, and that may explain why the adapter can't connect on those.

Is this compatible with Windows 8.0/8.1 64-bit?

I don't know first hand but the driver should be compatible with Windows 8 since Win7 drivers are usually compatible and Trendnet is pretty good about providing drivers and this type of device for a certain segment of user's is still needed.  I ran it on Win7 64 bit.

What I can tell you is, I used it to connect an old Garmin eTrex to my computer.

The eTrex used the serial port to transfer data, my new computer does not have a serial port so I bought this device to make the transfers.

It works!
