Can this FAX machine be set up "paperless"?  That is, can you set it up to NOT print a paper copy, but to save the image file to a folder on a computer that is attached via the FAX machine's USB port?

There is no option listed in the owners manual of this machine for sending faxes to a computer. There is mention of an optional Network (LAN) Board that can be purchased and installed (item NC-8100h), but no details on wheather it would do what you need. I would say pass on this machine and keep shopping. Possibly check into Fax Software that is on the market.

what is the capacity to print on a monthly basis and how do I identify toner/ink cartridge cost?

I am not exactly sure how many copies/prints/faxes are actually generated by this machine each month. However, this is our main fax machine on campus and it is used for faxes, as a printer, and also to make copies.  This is the second one of these that I have purchased and I am very, very happy with it's performance.

The toner cartridge yields approximately 3,000 pages of print but that all depends upon how much print is on the page.  Also, if you take the cartridge out and shake it when it states toner low, you can achieve many more copies than what the estimated usage is.
