Do you have to have wifi to use this printer? Or can you just plug into laptop and print?

You don’t need to use the WiFi. You can connect via USB, Ethernet or WiFi. During driver installation it should ask you which method you want to use. I’m not sure if a USB printer cable is included though, but any USB A to B cable will work.

I saw some cheaper printers come with an 'almost empty' toner. Does this come with a normal toner that prints for a while?

It does come with a starter toner cartridge which prints for roughly 50 to 100 pages before giving you a warning to replace the toner.  There are plentiful videos on YouTube to look for ways to refill and get more out of your toner cartridge without purchasing a replacement Brother cartridge.  Super super economically, I might add.  I can get the large replacement cartridge equivalent by refilling the cartridge with toner for less than 5 bucks a refill.  I think that will run for 3000 to 5000 pages!  This printer is best I have ever bought, largely considering the fact that you can refill toner and re-use the cartridge at such low cost!

Will this machine SCAN in COLOR???

according to the 'overview' on this very page: The laser printer comes with an 8.5x11.7in. (21.5x29.7cm) flatbed scanner with an optical scanning resolution of 1200x1200. The Brother wireless printer scanner can transfer black-and-white and color images and documents into several file formats, including JPEG, PNG, PDF, TIFF, BMP, MAX and XPS.

It's a typical scanner (like a stand alone type). It does depend on how you connect it to your computer. Mine is wireless and connected to my network and thus it's best to use their software so you can edit and file the documents away in the format you want. When loading their software I recommend reading and unticking any boxes that send back data information and of course you should visit their site and download the latest firmware and software updates.

Does this printer have 2 paper trays?

Will this connect with iOs/Mac products? I'm having a hard time finding a "decent" printer with these capabilities.

YES, this MFC device will print from MacOS, Windows, Ubuntu... I haven't found an operating system that it cannot accept print jobs. Its a great device! You can also do AirPrint with it too. We have several printers here, Konica Minolta, HP, Cannon, & Brother. The two brother MFC devices have had ZERO issues. We have windows, linux & MacOS clients here.

Does the FAX function require a 3rd party service to work?

This unit can operate as a traditional fax machine if plugged into a land based phone line (hard-line) by using the female jack on the back of the machine.  There are likely many software utilities that may enable you to send a fax via internet connections, but I don't know if it's possible to receive a fax via wi-fi or ethernet.

No, the auto document feeder (ADF) only supports single-sided jobs.

Can I print off my android phone?

Yes, you will need to download the HP print app and be connected to the same network as the printer. The printed format is not pretty. I stopped using it.
